About this listen

From the co-creators of Slow Burn, Fiasco is a narrative podcast that transports listeners into the day-to-day reality of America’s most pivotal historical events.

Using original interviews with dozens of key players, host Leon Neyfakh brings to life the forgotten twists and turns of the past while shedding light on the present day. The new season of Fiasco goes deep on the AIDS epidemic in America, with a special focus on the early years of the crisis, when a diagnosis was tantamount to a death sentence. The eight-part series looks at the mystery and missteps around identifying and treating a new, contagious disease, and what it took to get the public - and the government - to care.

I became a fan of Leon's work due to his involvement in the first two seasons of Slate's Slow Burn podcast (IMHO the second season is the best season of any podcast ever). This podcast delivers on the quality that we've come to expect from Leon. With everything currently going on with monkeypox and the way that the illness has been positioned, this podcast feels timely.

Although specifically about the AIDS crisis, they also don't shy away from the parallels to the latest epidemic.

As someone born in 1986, AIDs has always been around for me, but always something that happened to other people. This podcast takes you step by step through 15 years of panic, misinformation, demonizing, activism, hope and change. The aids epidemic is still going on, and we should all care.
