About this listen

Jon Hamm leads an all-star cast that includes Kate Mara, Ana de la Reguera, John Slattery, and Bradley Whitford in the riveting true story behind the making of the one American movie the FBI never wanted you to see.

The Big Lie follows FBI special agent Jack Bergin (Jon Hamm), who is sent to investigate three blacklisted filmmakers—Academy Award-winning writer Michael Wilson, Academy Award-nominated producer Paul Jarrico, and director Herbert J. Biberman—who were inspired by a New Mexico labor strike to make a movie that dramatized their pro-labor, pro-feminist beliefs. Convinced the film is a recruitment tool for the Communist Party, Jack will do whatever is necessary to shut the production down.

Featuring a star-studded cast that also includes Giancarlo Esposito, David Strathairn, Lisa Edelstein, Raymond Cruz, Troy Evans, Kirk Baltz, John Getz, and Lela Loren, The Big Lie is an explosive story of conspiracy, betrayal, and temptation that resonates with today’s divided America and reminds us all that fear spreads faster than the truth.

I had to turn it off after a few minutes. I listen to audible on my echo and in a semi public space. I felt this was not appropriate.

too much swearing to listen to without earbuds

Not big on audiobooks as I get distracted or do something else and have to keep rewinding but this kept me in tune the whole time. Felt like I could see what I was hearing, like if I was watching it on tv. Kept me wanting to know more. The performance, story, and sound effects were very great. Can’t wait to finish the 2nd book the big fix. Hope there’s more coming out.

A must read. Great story, performance, and sounds effects

I started it because it was free and I was credit-less. BUT what a nice surprise! Great performances by the whole cast. Hamm rocked it. The supporting actors were on-the-money authentic. And the story was really interesting. A bleak reminder of an America haunted by the red scare and the innocent people whose lives were ruined, the kind of paranoia that polarizes this wonderful country. Racist, fascist propaganda disguised as patriotism. I hoped this kind of idiocy and xenophobia was left in the 50's. But sadly...

Surprisingly Awesome! It's A Must Listen!

I don't believe the language of the 50's was this primitive. The words used in the 50's had adjectives that meant something, not ones used for the shock of it all. This drama is very entertaining, but, I can't listen to it.

Couldn't Finish

Haven't we all heard enough historical revisionism lionizing American Communist traitors? Bought and paid for by the Comintern, these sleazy Stalinists were in favor of leaving Hitler alone at the express command of Stalin's Comintern. Then, after Hitler did what Hitler was bound to do (invade the Soviet Union), these sleazy Stalinists were commanded to go full on anti-Hitler, which they did, but not because they disliked Hitler. They did it because they were commanded to do so by Stalin's Comintern.

They pledged their allegiance to international communism, took orders from the Soviets, undermined their country with vile agitprop, and then spent the next 15 years complaining that their fellow countrymen refused to hire them while the stench of Stalinist collaboration still was wafting about their person. Back then Americans had the common sense and decency to hire people who weren't traitors.

None of these sleazy Stalinists ever apologized for their treason. Not a single one of them. It's 2022, can we please stop lionizing these wretched traitors?

Boring, revisionist agitprop
