  • Summary

  • Previously known as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight is the intersection of True Crime, journalism and systematic corruption. Welcome to the new face of MMP. True Sunlight is the antithesis of True crime. True Sunlight values accuracy over "access journalism". True Sunlight is shed with empathy — not exploitation. True Sunlight was created as a matter of public service — not just entertainment. While the name of the podcast has changed, our mission, values and team have not. We are simply expanding our horizons while continuing to shine a much needed bright light on crime and corruption wherever it appears. Celebrated journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are taking their style of reporting beyond Alex Murdaugh and his co-conspirators while pursuing justice for all the victims you've met so far. Ranked #1 and #2 globally in 2021 and 2023 respectively as the Murdaugh Murders Podcast, True Sunlight provides unmatched insight into the crimes and criminals exposed on MMP and dives deep into new instances of corruption across the US. We empower listeners to understand their legal and judicial systems through investigative journalism while providing tools to hold agencies and public figures accountable in order to change those systems for the better. • TSP #64 - 'How Selfish And Ungodly’: What JP Miller’s ‘Evidence’ Says About Mica’s Mental Health (Part Two) + Murdaugh Update
    Aug 29 2024
Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their look into the Mica Francis case with Part Two of their deep dive into the pile of “evidence” her estranged husband — Myrtle Beach Pastor JP Miller — filed in her probate case. The evidence was meant to support JP’s claims that he was a good husband and not the cause of Mica’s death this past spring. Instead, Mandy and Liz are finding that the evidence — when pieced together — provides a disturbing look at the early days of the couple’s marriage. From the very beginning, JP seems to have seized on Mica’s alleged bipolar disorder diagnosis and appears to have used it as a way to contain and control Mica. Also on today’s episode, the Alex Murdaugh Clown Show is coming back to town. This week, jilted Juror 785 and Juror 630 make their television premier as they help Team Murdaugh manipulate the headlines ahead of Alex’s hearing in the state Supreme Court for his conviction murder conviction appeal. • TSP #63 - ‘The Scariest Thing Of Our Entire Lives’: The Horrifying Truth Revealed From JP Miller’s Evidence - Part One
    Aug 22 2024
Investigative reporters Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their in-depth coverage of the Mica Francis case. Earlier this month, exhibits filed with Horry County Probate Court by Mica’s estranged husband, Myrtle Beach Pastor JP Miller, were made available to the public. To JP Miller, they are evidence that Mica Miller was a sick woman and he only wanted the best for her — that her estrangement from him was the result of family pressure and not because of anything she felt. He is adamant that he bears no responsibility in her April 27 death. But does the evidence show what JP says it does? Over the next few episodes, Mandy and Liz will analyze the exhibits piece by piece and discuss what this newly revealed information actually says about JP’s relationship with Mica. In Part One, they explore the first two months of Mica’s marriage to JP and specifically the events that occurred in the 30 days between Mica’s surgery on Dec. 1, 2017, and their church wedding at the end of the year. JP maintains that Mica experienced a bout of post-anesthetic psychosis and that the effects of this lasted in some form or other until her death. But is that really what happened? A look at emails and texts from that time seem to point to something else … and that something looks a whole lot like coercive control. Also on the show, a FOIA request from Luna Shark reveals new information in Mica’s case. In February of this year, Mica Francis reached out to the South Carolina Secretary of State’s Office to report that JP had allegedly stolen her notary seal. Premium Members get an extended episode with analysis of the so-called “undecipherable email” from 2017 that JP claims shows the depth of Mica’s break from reality.... • TSP #62 - 'They Feared He Had Killed and Buried Me Somewhere’: New 911 Calls in Mica Francis Case Reveal Haunting Details
    Aug 15 2024
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell are once again forced to scrap their plans for an episode topic because of breaking news. On Tuesday, TikTok user JusticeNTruth4SCcourts posted never-before published 911 calls from Mica Francis and her estranged husband Pastor JP Miller. This caught Mandy’s and Liz’s attention because they had FOIA’d Horry County for just about everything one can think of or related to this case and yet these calls were not disclosed to us. This public agency said to us that they gave all they found....? Are the police protecting themselves and violating public information laws? Or is this trove of calls now part of a bigger investigation into what led to Mica’s death in April? Mandy and Liz break down the new calls and what they mean to the timeline. They also consider new information revealed by both Mica and JP and how it fits into the bigger picture. What role — if any — did JP’s oldest son play in the harassment Mica was experiencing in February, March and April? And did Mica actually sign the power of attorney that granted JP complete authority over her medical decisions? The deeper the rabbit hole goes, the more sunlight Mandy and Liz seek to bring in this case. Join Luna Shark Premium today at Lunashark.Supercast.com. Love so much but lately…

I have been listening for multiple years now and you’ve really all done an incredible job providing real and trustworthy information. And on top of all the Murdaugh madness— you’ve exposed so much of the corruption evident in our legal system— not just So Carolina. I truly love Liz’s brain and how she connects dots and sees around corners—- I’m so impressed at her intelligence and the impact she’s making.

I’m sharing this small nugget of negative feedback because I believe you all deserve (and I believe - appreciate) a trend I’ve been hearing from your podcasts lately. Lately, so much of the beginning of the episode is focused on Mandy’s journey
About her book and also the surrounding accolades/ outcomes from that effort. I can easily just fast forward thru that commentary l, that feels like it lasts sometimes 3 mins up to 8 or 9 mins long.
I 100% support women achieving big things—- congratulations! I think there could be a better balance of the content. Thank you for listening!

Great Podcat

The local podcasts on the Murdaugh case are much more interesting than the national coverage.

Complicated lives

This story is very sad but also pretty complicated and there’s a lot more to come I’m sure.
This podcast does a really good job of explaining the background and why it matters.
It’s helpful that the chapters deal with each death so that the connections become clearer, and later chapters update each part of each story. There are a lot of plates to keep spinning.
Thank you for doing such great reporting.

Well done podcast

Story is unbelievable, research is top notch & podcast is well put together. This is true reporting & journalism so I’m not expecting a Morgan Freeman type of performance here; I’m expecting compelling & accurate reporting on the facts & that’s what you get here.

Love this podcast!

Murder ✅
Drugs ✅
Scandal ✅
It starts out slow in this ever growing scandal. Love that they are finally weeding out corruption in the court system and exposing these crooks. It's sad the system is so slow.

Incredible Investigative Journalism But...

I want to say the positives first:
This podcast is fantastic and I really appreciate all of the investigative efforts Mandy and the team have put forth into exposing the truth. I live in South Carolina and have for 20 years, and it is shocking to have this level of detail and deep rooted corruption exposed after many many years. Thank you for being a pillar of truth and doing incredible Investigative Journalism not just for the victims and their families, but also for the discourse surrounding SC politics and law enforcement.
The negatives: I've been following this podcast since day one, and after the first few episodes, Mandy would take a moment to criticize those who had to just point out how her voice sounded. I get it, it's frustrating when you have such a compelling story and all of this evidence and the thing that people point out is your voice. But now that I have been a weekly listener for over a year, I have to agree with the critics. In many cases it's not about what you're saying it's about how you were saying it. And Mandy, although incredibly passionate, has a very distracting delivery with the story. There is just way too much inflection rises and drops in one sentence, every sentence, for 45 minutes. I have listened to Mandy talk in interviews and she does not talk like this on a regular basis, only when reading a scripted story for the podcast. it's distracting and it takes me longer to finish the episode because I have to pause it - my head hurts. And as the podcast has developed with more traction, her delivery has gotten worse - I think she does it in an effort to make important key notes and stress the important part of the story or that sentence? But if you put that inflection on every sentence and stress that everything is important, then by that logic nothing is more important than the other.

I want to hopefully point out to Mandy that while some people are great at the investigation portion of the story, I think Liz's stage presence is better suited for the delivery , aka the story telling. AND THAT'S OKAY. Please don't let the haters take away from the phenomenal job you and the team you have done - but it's important to recognize that your audience is telling you that you're delivery and storytelling is not getting through to them and you are losing key people that you want listening to your podcast. It is incredibly distracting. You have addressed it many times that people need to stop commenting on your voice, but it's your speaking style that is just very distracting and is frustrating. Don't lose the audience because of something small like that. Thank you for all you've done, keep it up.
