• Climate Courage: the politics of climate
    Nov 22 2024

This year, 1.5 billion people have gone to or are going to the polls, with more than 50 countries holding significant elections in 2024. Considering 2023 was the hottest year on record, and 2024 looks like it will smash that record, not to mention extreme weather events escalating across the globe, we’re going to vote for leaders who are climate aware at least, yes?

Well no. Not only do we have a climate denier back in the White House, but Green Parties across the world have had terrible results in many of these elections, while right-wing political factions are working together, collaborating in private meetings. Then we have Argentina pulling its delegates out of Cop29 after three days, but at least they were there, because many important leaders didn’t even show up. So, what the hell is going on?

We are absolutely thrilled to have activist Robert Redmayne Hosking joining us this week. Robert is a lifelong nature and environmental enthusiast, and a conservationist at heart.
Environmental and climate policies are his passion, and he is relentless on X, showing up with daily protests, as he works to shape the future of how leaders, governments and the media think. Robert won’t soft ball here. He tells it like it is, so get ready for an engaging and passionate conversation.

The politics of climate is a critical topic, so please do join us Friday, 22nd November – 3pm Singapore time, and 7am UK time.

Climate Courage is a livestream, held every two weeks and is co-hosted by Andrea T Edwards, Dr. David Ko and Richard Busellato. On the show, we cover critical topics across the full spectrum of the polycrisis, in everyday language, and we go big picture on the climate crisis, while also drilling down and focusing on the actions we can all take to be part of the solution. Whether individual action, community action, or national/global action - every single one of us can be part of ensuring a live-able future for our children and grandchildren. We owe them that!

  • The Know Show – where do we go from here?
    Nov 15 2024

Since our last show, the US election happened and Cop29 kicked off, with a whole lot of other news in between. In the US, the recriminations and post-election analysis consumes our feeds, while Cop29 starts with the US threatening to leave the Paris Climate Agreement (again), Argentina ordering its representatives to leave after three days, all while reports state fossil fuel emissions have hit new highs, devastating storms continue across the world, and the cost of food continues to rise as extreme weather events destroy essential crops everywhere. To add to that, global media have been called out for reporting stories that are completely different to what people are seeing with their own eyes. How can we trust the media?

So where do we go from here? What will be the global fall-out from the US election? Which country will move to the far right next? Germany is on the line here! But trust is another massive crisis we’ve faced for decades, and the media seems intent on making it worse – so where do we go for the truth? Or has our information system become so corrupted it’s not even possible anymore? And while all this chaos escalates across our societies, scientists are continually issuing red alerts on the planetary risks – a growing food crisis, destruction from extreme weather events, ecosystems collapsing, ocean heat and its impacts, the earth’s energy imbalance and on it goes. Does it feel like we’re heading in the right direction?

To join us this week, we are delighted to welcome Dr. Damini Chawla, an award-winning professional speaker with a unique multi-cultural background and personal story fuelled by courage. Dr Damini has spent 13 years wielding drills and curing cavities, but dentistry was just the foundation for a deeper calling - human connection and behaviour. A provocateur, author, facilitator and emcee, we are looking forward to hearing her thoughts on where do we go from here?

The Livestream kicks off at 3pm Singapore time, Friday 15th November. Come and join us.

The Know Show is a Livestream held every fortnight on Friday, where Andrea T Edwards, Tim Wade and Joe Augustin, and at least one special guest, review the news that’s getting everyone’s attention, as well as perhaps what requires our attention. We’ll talk about what it means to us, the world and we hope to inspire great conversations on the news that matters in the world today.

The Know Show is based on Andrea T Edwards Weekend Reads, which are published every Saturday on andreatedwards.com, and covers the planetary crisis, topical moments in the world, global politics and war, business and technology, social issues, and passion/humour/history. Join us.

  • Climate Courage: the air we breathe
    Nov 8 2024

New Delhi had an air pollution watch leading up to this year’s Diwali celebrations, with its air quality remaining ‘very poor’ for the 7th consecutive day. Meanwhile, across the border, the Pakistani city of Lahore had to close all primary schools for a week, with the air quality index (which measures a range of pollutants) exceeding 1,000 on Saturday. This is WELL above the benchmark of 300, which is considered "dangerous" by the World Health Organization.

Right across Southeast Asia, a health crisis is unfolding due to coal-fired power plants releasing fine particle pollution, causing millions of premature deaths annually. But it’s deforestation too. In Singapore, Malaysia, and many other neighbouring countries (depending on which way the wind is blowing), the region experiences an annual “haze” season. This happens because tropical forests in Indonesia’s peatlands are intentionally burned, so palm oil plantations can replace them. It causes havoc in the region, including driving many local animals close to extinction – like the Sumatran Tiger and the Orangutan. While not over, stronger action has been taken, and the region hasn’t seen a haze like its worst, which happened in 2015!

Moving up North to Thailand, it also has an annual burning season in the northern regions of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, resulting in haze sweeping across the country, and for those living in the smoke, it’s deadly. Until you’ve experienced living in this type of pollution, it’s very challenging to describe how terrible it is, but of course, it is also very easy to sit back and say “someone else will sort it out.” Well, our amazing guest this week – Khun Weenarin Lulitanonda aka Weena - is leading from the front and established the Thailand Clean Air Network nearly six years ago, and is fighting with all of her power to get this act passed.

A Senior Consultant for the World Bank, please join us is welcoming Weena to the show, where she will share the work she is doing, what drove her to act, the challenges she faces and what she hopes to achieve. Weena is an inspiration, but also an example of what can be done when someone cares enough. We can all be like Weena.

The air we breathe is vital for all life and we need to prioritize it, so please do join us Friday, 6th November – 2pm Bangkok time, 3pm Singapore time, and 7am UK time.

  • Growth, resilience, the manosphere
    Nov 5 2024

We worked together nearly 30 years ago and have been crossing each other’s paths around the world ever since. However, it was our recent catch up where I saw a deep level of growth in John Kerr, so I wanted to talk to him about the journey.

John has been in professional communications his entire career, working in senior leadership roles for the last 20 years or so. But perhaps those days are over, as John embarks on journey’s around the world, with a huge African journey ahead. What will he discover within himself as he gives himself the space for silence?

Travel for me was the eye-opener from a self-development perspective. I got to go deep within myself and work out what I thought, versus other people’s ideas I’ve been told to believe or I had been programmed with. That means I’m always delighted to speak with other’s who have gone through this growth experience, because there’s nothing quite like it.

Our conversation goes wide, from his story as a young man growing up with a Samoan single mum, growing into a man in New Zealand, and the evolution to today, which includes healing the soul scars. We finish up discussing the manosphere – how can we help men be their best today?

Thanks so much for talking to me John and I hope you have the most amazing experiences in Africa, including the painful moments that will test and grow your resilience!

You can find John on LinkedIn here https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnkerrnz/

  • The Know Show – survival in the age of division
    Nov 1 2024

The US Election is happening on November 5th and it’s not just Americans who will be happy to see the back of it, the whole world will hopefully sigh with relief. No question it’s been intense, but regardless of the results, the divisions in the US will remain, and more broadly, we all know it’s not just the US suffering this blight, as many Western democracies face division too. The bigger risk is - will it continue to ripple out and infect the whole world? Time to start addressing it.

So, that’s our theme this week, and we’re going to reference an article in Australia’s The Saturday Paper, titled ‘Twelve keys to good leadership’ by Barry Jones. We’ll start with the five general properties (there are 14 in total) required for fascism to rise, and then we’ll speak to the opposite, where Barry Jones defines the 12 essential factors in leadership necessary for stable, liberal democracy. It will be worth understanding this, so we can all embrace it and change the direction we are heading in, right?

To help us understand this very important challenge, we are delighted to welcome Adeline Tiah 謝善嫻, who is a leadership and reinvent coach. Adeline is the author of REINVENT 4.0, and her focus is all about r𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞 f𝐮𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐨𝐟 w𝐨𝐫𝐤, where she works with CEOs, CHROs and leaders to build adaptive cultures that thrive alongside AI. A start-up advisor, coach, mentor and more, we’re excited to hear what she has to say on this very important topic, and hope you join us.

The Livestream kicks off at 3pm SG time, Friday 1st November. Hope to see you there.

  • Climate Courage: getting our cities climate ready
    Oct 25 2024

Is your city climate ready? Is your government or council taking the appropriate action to adapt for the climate that is coming? As we watch the disasters unfold around the world, we know that far too many governing bodies are on the back foot when it comes to adaptation, and in poorer countries, it is even more challenging to prepare as the funding just isn’t there.

When it comes to preparing our cities, what should our leaders be doing today to ensure we are ready for the climate we have coming, and what is already happening around the world? More importantly, what’s not happening fast enough, which cities are leading the charge, and what cities are most at risk? There is so much to discuss around this topic, including preparing for climate refugees, investing in critical infrastructure like climate-ready dams, roads, bridges, all the way through to adequate mental health support services and resilient healthcare infrastructure, so it’s a lot to discuss, but we’ll work hard to get to the bottom of it.

To understand more, we are delighted to welcome John Maynard, a consultant and expert in safer towns and cities, who started his own consultancy after decades working for local councils in Australia. His focus today is crime prevention and community safety focusing on the planning, design, management and maintenance of the Safe City. John is an expert in the application of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles and the relationship between human behaviour and the way we plan and design public and private spaces. He is also finishing a book on this wide-ranging area.

This is going to be a compelling overview of how our cities function and plan for the future, so please do join us Friday, 25th October – 6pm AU EST, 3pm Singapore time, and 8am UK time.

  • The Know Show – the woke mind virus
    Oct 19 2024

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, woke, wokeism or ‘the woke mind virus’ are now part of our public vernacular. But where did it come from? How did this awful word or phrase become so normalized in our societies? Equally, is woke a bad thing? And surely it’s not a mind virus?

To hear the word woke, all you have to do is watch any political campaign (anywhere in the world) and you’ll hear woke used as a blanket term to criticize anything progressive. That includes racism, women’s rights, LGBTQIA+ rights, DEI, migration, all the way through to cancelling books in libraries or schools. So why is it everywhere? Is it a good thing for society or is it dividing us even more? And who benefits from its popularity? We’re going to dig into it and see if we can come to a consensus.

To help us discuss this very current topic, we are delighted to welcome back the very woke Graham Harvey CSP, an award-winning speaker, business coach, service designer, and author. Graham coaches service leaders and their teams to design cultures of next-level service excellence and to deliver standout customer experiences that delight every customer... every time! We invited Graham because he’s all in on woke, but who on our team is not? Join us and you’ll find out.

  • Climate Courage: resilience and humour in the age of the polycrisis
    Sep 27 2024

As the world starts to comprehend the impacts of the polycrisis – which is the simultaneous occurrence of several catastrophic events all happening at the same time – we must get focused on building our resilience “muscles,” while also understanding we need to be there for each other, because it is our local communities who will step up when the going gets tough.

As the floods, fires, droughts, famine, storms, sea level rise, and other disasters keep showing us, none of us are safe in the challenging years ahead, no matter where we live. This means refugees are on the move in greater numbers than ever before, not just from climate hotspots, but also from war-torn countries, or those fleeing political repression.

If you are in this situation and have no wealth, what is this journey like? How do you stay positive and hopeful of a future for yourself and your family? And is joy possible? Because if we forget to smile and laugh, what’s the point?

That’s why we thought it was time to hear the story of a very special man, who has been through hell and back, and today he’s a working comedian, brightening people’s lives around the world. We are delighted to have the opportunity to introduce you to Nico Ndlovu.

Nico is originally from Zimbabwe, after which he struggled as a refugee and asylum seeker, and now he’s lived in Scotland for the best part of two decades. Today he is a podcast producer for Siyakhuluma We Talk Podcast, which focuses on the experiences of asylum seekers in the UK, and he also hosts various events, including his own comedy open mic night: That Guy Comedy Show.

Nico’s volunteers with various projects and charities in Glasgow, with his focus always on the movement of people such as asylum seekers and refugees. He presently volunteers with NACCOM Network (The No Accommodation Network), he is a member of One Strong Voice, the UK’s first coalition of campaigners with lived experience of the immigration and asylum system, he volunteers with Castlemilk Community Church Furniture Project, and he is a board member of the Southeast Integration Network.

That is what the show is about, from refugee to comedian and all the lessons learned, it’s happening on Friday, 27th September – 3pm SG time, 8am UK time. Come and join us.
