  • Ep. 12: Hiding Behind the Moon
    Aug 5 2024

Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 12th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Hiding Behind the Moon," I focus on artists in my music collection whose names begin with the letter J.

My title track takes me in a different direction for this set. Straight out the gate, I highlight the late Jeff Hanson's "Hiding Behind the Moon" is only in my collection in the first place because I heard it in a first season episode of "Nip/Tuck."

And so many songs by J-named artists trace their pathway into my collection by way of soundtracks and other media engagement I decided to lead with my Sparks entries, because with a few exceptions, most of them are by artists with one song in my collection. Apart from Jeff Hanson, this list includes Jace Everett, Jack White and Alicia Keys, Janet Seidel, Jem, Joshua Henry, John C. Reilly, Joe Purdy, Joyce Kennedy, Julia Migenes, Jan August, Jack Johnson and Jared Halley.

In Influences, artists with full LPs in my collection, I talk about Jefferson Airplane's "Surrealistic Pillow," Joss Stone's "The Soul Sessions," Jewel's "Pieces of You" and "Spirit" and Joan Osborne's "Relish."

In Breakouts, artists with multiple songs in my collection, I talk about finding a couple Journey tracks in my collection I know were taped off the radio back in the 1980s, some of the most Gen X music I own. Also, more from Joshua Henry and Jared Halley and songs by Jason Mraz.

And in a second pass at Sparks, other artists with one song in my collection, I Have Jay-Z's collaboration with Linkin Park, Jethro Tull, Jesus Jones, Johnny Cash, John Lennon and John Denver, Janis Ian, Johnny Rivers and Joss Whedon.

As always, any "music" or "singing" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast was simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements. • Ep. 11: Relics of Things Past
    Jun 19 2024

Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 11th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack titled "Relics of Things Past," it's my second installment of artists in my music collection whose names begin with the letter I.

Yup, "Ep. 10: Caramia" focused on the 80+ songs in my collection by The Indigo Girls. Part 2 of the I's starts out with an interview with a college friend of mine, Mark Leonard Mason, and he talked to me about a band he was in at the time called Ice Nine. Since conducting and editing that interview, I received the tragic news that Mark lost his life in a car accident. I added some words ahead of the interview and beyond it to reflect our loss.

Under Influences [full LPs] I talk about Inspiral Carpets, Incubus and Ibeyi. Under Breakouts [multiple tracks] I talk about Iggy Pop and INXS. And under Sparks [single tracks] I talk about Ice Cube, Inara George and Information Society.

Pics in VideoFuzzy's Instagram of Ice Nine cassette and CD artwork, Mark Leonard Mason from the '90s, and screencaps from Ibeyi's performance of "Deathless" from their 2017 release "Ash" on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in March of 2018.

  • PROMO: Ep. 11: Relics of Things Past
    Jun 15 2024

Hiya! I'm Terry J. Aman, host of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, and in "Ep. 11: Relics of Things Past," I share my interview with Mark Leonard Mason of the Grand Forks, North Dakota, band Ice Nine who tragically we learned lost his life shortly after I spoke with him. The interview reflected his humor and passion and I have included as much of it as I could. His friend and former bandmate Eric Fundingsland shared a link to Ice Nine's final concert on bandcamp, and that link is in my show notes along with his other projects and web presence. Plus comments on Inspiral Carpets, Incubus, Ibeyi, Ice Cube, INXS, Iggy Pop and Information Society. • Ep. 10: Caramia
    Apr 27 2024

THE INDIGO GIRLS in concert at the Fargo Civic Center in May 1995.

Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my 10th episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, I'm writing to you from Grand Rapids, Mich., where I recently took in a live taping of the All About Agatha podcast with host and author Kemper Donovan, discussing his debut mystery novel "The Busy Body," which I reviewed around the 20-minute mark in Ep. 92 of my other, more media-centered podcast, VideoFuzzy. https://bit.ly/49U5dQX

Kemper was in fine voice, handing off hosting duties to Schuler Books events coordinator Elizabeth Bosscher and giving so far the most detailed look at that novel, released earlier this year, on his podcast, check it out if you get a chance, it's sure to post shortly.

As for this podcast, most of my entries so far have been driven by the alphabet – all the artists in my collection who begin with the letter A, or the letter C and so on. But with the Indigo Girls, I've got seven LPs and a few singles to talk about – more than 80 tracks in my collection altogether – as well as a VHS tape of concert footage.

They're artists I've been listening to since I was in my teens. I've attended at least one, possibly two of their concerts. They've influenced my musical tastes and woldview more than I will ever know and I enjoyed this opportunity to talk about them.

Format was a bit different this time. I talk a little about my earliest encounters with their music, then I talk about their single "Caramia" as a title track, pulling up "Burn All the Letters" as a feature later on.

Under "Influences," I tried talking about the LPs in order of release, but quickly found that didn't really convey my experience of their music in my life. So I approached it in general topics, like spirituality, and exploration, and activism.

I talked about a vibe I was getting from their song "Burn All the Letters" and emotional ties that song sparked in me. I talked about a couple songs from "All That We Let In" that seem to explore different sides of the same conversation – "Fill It Up Again" and "Come On Home" – and close with "Go," one of the strongest get-out-the-vote motivators I've ever heard.

As always, any "music" anyone thought they heard in this tiny indie podcast was simple sketch reference included for illustrative purposes to prompt listeners to track down and explore commercially available music through officially licensed sources and is by no means meant to infringe on anyone's copyright, licensing or distribution agreements.

Hiya! I'm Terry J. Aman, host of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, and in "Ep. 10: Caramia," comments on the Indigo Girls, the Indigo Girls and oh yeah, the Indigo Girls! This one stood out because as I started talking about artists in my collection that began with the letter I, this veteran feminist folk duo with seven, count 'em, SEVEN LPs in my collection clearly needed to be their own episode, focused on the contributions to my life and energy by Amy Ray and Emily Saliers, celebrated folk duo The Indigo Girls. • Ep. 9: Flagpole Sitta
    Jan 23 2024

Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my ninth episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, titled "Flagpole Sitta," I focus on artists in my music collection whose names begin with the letter H.

My intro includes a reprise of the scrap of "At the Closing of the Year" from the "Toys" soundtrack arranged by Hans Zimmer. (link: https://bit.ly/3UaASsX) I shared a passage in Ep. 91 of my VideoFuzzy podcast, but I felt it had gotten a little overproduced and I wanted to take a cleaner, more bare bones run at it here.

Under Title Track, I talk about "Flagpole Sitta" by Harvey Danger (https://bit.ly/425uCoB) and other songs on their 1997 LP release "Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?"

In Lost Tracks, songs that did not transfer properly from one PC to the next, I added "Long Cool Woman (in a Black Dress)" (1972) by The Hollies back into my collection, and talk about it alongside their 1966 hit "Bus Stop."

In my Influences segment [full LPs], I talk about The Heart Throbs' "Cleopatra Grip," and Hootie and the Blowfish's "Cracked Rear View," highlighting "Not Even the Trees" (https://bit.ly/4b4GMlz)

In my Breakouts segment [multiple tracks] I talk about Halestorm's "I Miss the Misery" and their cover of "Bad Romance."

In my Sparks segment [single tracks] I talk about Hootie and the Blowfish and Helmet w/ David Yow's contributions to the Led Zeppelin tribute compilation "Encomium." Also, Hole's cover of "Gold Dust Woman," Henry McClintock's "Big Rock Candy Mountain," The Hilltoppers' "P.S. I Love You," and Highly Suspect's "My Name is Human" (https://bit.ly/47LCoow)

Hiya! My name's Terry J. Aman and in this, my eighth episode of VideoFuzzy the Soundtrack, titled "Houses," I focus on artists in my music collection whose names begin with the letter G.

This one explores some overlap between my two podcast projects, music and media – particularly music I've encountered in shows and movies and added to my Apple Music catalog.

Under Title Track, I talk about "Houses" by Great Northern and "Take on Me" by aha! I added "Houses" after the song appeared in the fourth season finale of "The Magicians." Both were posted on YouTube here: Great Northern "Houses" at https://bit.ly/40wP9kU, and a-ha! "Take on Me" from "The Magicians" at https://bit.ly/40vrIIV

In Lost Tracks, songs that did not transfer properly from on PC to the next, I replaced missing or damaged songs by George Michael, Good Charlotte, Garbage, The Gotan Project, The Guess Who and Green Day. I also added songs by Gotye and Gavin Mikhail.
