Ya Alright Hun?

By: Jamie Murphy
  • Summary

  • Mental Health in this country is on its knees.

With this podcast we are hoping to shed light on this and get people to tell their stories. Also to shed light on the problems that plague the overstretched services.

Hosted by Jamie T Murphy and Wally O Neill.

Jamie is no stranger to talking. Despite having a cleft palate at birth, it hasn't stopped him since. A father, partner, musician and proud Enniscorthy man. Has hosted previous podcasts and is currently on the road in dynamic two piece, Kermie. He also makes a mean ham sandwich. Two slices.... No less

Wally is the proprietor of Red Books in Wexford. A Bridgetown man who took over the running of local charity, Wexford People Helping People. Also a father and husband, Wally is a tireless advocate for mental health and does trojan work for people on the fringes.

The podcast is produced by Wally, Jamie and Jorma Kirkko.

Jorma is also chief editor as well as being a podcaster himself and co host of the wildly popular Talking Istanbullocks. A comedy podcast!

This week on Ya Alright Hun. Hosts, Wally O Neill and Jamie T Murphy are joined by the man, the myth, the legend that is Richie Kennedy.

Richie grew up in the Royal County, Meath. Brought up by a single mother, Richie became a man with a job. A good job. But he was always chasing something else. Money and security from his job made him look for more.

What he was looking for was more. More excess, more avarice. These issues came to a head and Richie suffered a severe mental health breakdown. He went to get help and tried to level himself back on the straight and narrow.

With medical help and support from his local GP, Richie got better again. But it got bad again pretty quick. Richie, very openly tells Wally and Jamie what brought him to this point in his life.

His story is full of sadness, problems and a man looking for something. But there's also hope and a positive outlook on the future.

Welcome to Episode Three of Ya Alright Hun?

This week, hosts Jamie T Murphy and Wally O Neill sit down with Steve Huenneke.

Steve grew up in, St. Louis Missouri. He worked first as a journalist, and then for almost forty years as an economics professor, teaching in Missouri and three other US states. He emigrated from America in May 2018 to start a new life as a citizen of Ireland, in Wexford.

Steve is a poet. He has written his whole life, but rarely seeks to be published. He writes his poetry to read and share with friends and live audiences. His poems are a calling in every meaning of that word. They contain thoughts, memories and feelings about both his life and about the condition and evolution of the world.

Steve regularly participates in spoken word gatherings at Red Books in Wexford. He writes not under deadline, but as a lifeline.

Thanks to Jorma Kirkko as always.

Episode Two of Ya Alright Hun?

This week we have local woman, Mary Beary. Mary is well known to all of us here in Red Books and indeed to most of Wexford town.

A poet, a writer, an absolute beacon of hope and joy and also a mother. This is the story of Mary's son, Martin.

Martin died in the early hours of the morning of the 30th August 2016. He left behind a family of his own and a devastated mother.

Mary very openly tells us about her experiences with Martin. Before, during and after his death. A story that is in turn tragic, heart rendering and ultimately hopeful.

Produced by Jamie T Murphy, Wally O Neill and Jorma Kirkko.
