  • How Lighting Affects The Growing Brain with Dr Shelley James
    Jul 29 2021

In this episode Dr Shelley James of Age of Light Innovations Group discusses how, during lock-down in 2020, her nieces and godchildren's health and happiness was affected by a life indoors, and was inspired to do something about it.

She knew that lighting makes a huge difference in our lives, and especially for growing brains. We talked about the Luna project she developed and how it covered different ways lighting impacts a growing brain and simple things you can do to improve your child's health and wellbeing, including:

    • Understanding your body clock (and how it's different in teenagers) and how to give it a boost with lighting at different times of day
    • How going outside more could reduce the chance of your child needing to wear glasses even if you do.
    • Using natural, bright light to trigger 'happy hormones'.
    • Avoiding headaches that could be caused by your lights.

Shelley is a lumenologist. She's an international expert on light and well-being and a passionate advocate for public engagement with science. She recently appeared on the award-winning BBC series Revolutions: Ideas that Changed the World.
