relaunching the new Evangelization, Nicola Di Bianco at La Nova meets

  • Summary

  • La nova meets. The events of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples. Sala Margherita Lama Caputo, Sunday 30 March 2025. A mathematician, a historian and two philosophers at Santa Maria la Nova to discuss a new book by Nicola Di Bianco on the “new evangelization”. Di Nola, Arciprete and Giustiniani, have been holding a Seminar on “Language and knowledge” for several years, which has already had several sessions in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Salerno and in the Theological Faculty of San Tommaso di Capodimonte-Naples. The aim is to arrive, if possible, at a new language that can express the divine, the religious, the spiritual in unitary terms. Now the “provocation” of the “New Evangelization” – which the Catholic Church has been aiming for since the beginning of the third millennium – is the lever of this new round, under the direction of Prof. Giuseppe Reale, Director of the Monumental Complex of Santa Maria la Nova in Naples.

Introduced by Pasquale Giustiniani. A few decades ago, together with Filippo Toriello, we published the volume: New Evangelization: What, How. Designed to help catechists and pastoral workers, it collected, and translated pastorally, an insistent expression of the papal Magisterium, which was already then configuring a real re-definition of the first Christian duty to announce the so-called Kèrygma, which was, at the time, commonly described as new in ardor and new in method. Nicola Di Bianco, in the described horizon, focuses well on the fact that such novitas, particularly in the sense of a full-scale confrontation with scientific and technological modernity, is evident in the Magisterium of Pope Francis. He, by the Author, is in fact, rightly considered the first pope to have assumed in a complete form the dialogue with modernity or postmodernity. All this is also leading to a new way of configuring the Church - a polyhedron, rather than a hierarchical pyramid, a field hospital rather than a self-sufficient militancy -; but also a new way of self-perceiving the Petrine primacy. In short, the now traditional expression of "new evangelization" implies a true reform of the Church: a fact, this, that already appeared clear to the fathers of the Council of Trent, grappling with the barrier to oppose a reform that then appeared as a revolution. It is made even more urgent today by the situation of the acceleration of events (as Pope Francis himself says, with an Argentine inflection), given the fact, as Di Bianco punctually notes, that our time is increasingly characterized by rapid changes and transformations. And this not only in international structures, but also in ethical customs, sometimes plagued by unexpected phenomena, such as the spread of abuses of all kinds in the Church (not only sexual, but also social, of power ...), such as the real drifts of traditional anthropological conceptions, of social systems, of international structures, of customs ... The re-emergence of the need for a new evangelization thus poses the central question of the book: what faith to propose to the globalized, technologized, singularized person, to overcome the impasse of the transition in progress? The Author declares himself pertinently convinced that it is necessary to start again from the centrality of Jesus Christ (moreover, in harmony with other Authors of the series "Biblioteca di Scenari"). But all this requires dealing, in a calm and scientifically founded way, with what Di Bianco defines as the current "challenge" of the neo-Manichaean, neo-Cathar, neo-Pelagian, apocalyptic and neo-millennial sects: inspired by alleged private revelations and directed by self-styled seers, these instances today run through the same Christian people who in the meantime, in the West, are registering a sociological decline in traditional practice.
