The Adventures of Filomena

In a small town near the city of Boston lives Filomena, a 12-year-old parakeet. As she pays close attention to the people and to the world around her, Filomena discovers her universe is much bigger than the cage in which she lives and that life can be a wonderful adventure if we choose to make it so. Join Filomena in her adventures as she fights a pirate in an imaginary ship, remembers growing up with two children, and helps us see the world through her small eyes and her big heart.

In the summer, Filomena goes to the garden where she has a diverse group of friends who enrich her life. Through their conversations, Filomena learns about the long journey to and back from Mexico, which some of the birds and butterflies in the garden take each year. She enjoys seeing the squirrels, and the birds take turns eating from the bird feeder that hangs from a lamppost. However, Liberty, the blue jay, does not see why she needs to be considered with other birds as she eats her fill. But she is in for a surprise that will help her understand how much friends can achieve.

In this fourth book in the series, Filomena meets Andria, a teacher who teaches students who have left their home countries and become refugees. As the teaches them how to gain voice through the arts, Andria and Filomena discover how much these students can teach them.
