Russian Poetry

There are few better ways to discover the identity of a nation or people than by listening to their poetry. From historical events to moral values to the political landscape (and often visions of the actual landscape), poetry, at its best, reveals the soul of a people. And Russia has offered us some of the very best.

These masterly poems span the whole of Nabokov's career from "Music", written in 1914, to the short, playful "To Vera", composed in 1974. Eugene Onegin, an aristocrat, much like Pushkin and his peers in his attitude and habits, is bored. He visits the countryside where the young and passionate Tatyana falls in love with him. The Odyssey is the second - the Iliad being the first - masterpiece by Homer. The story of a long journey by the king of Ithaca, Odysseus, as he returns home after the Trojan War has been frequently published, staged, and filmed. This audio performance of the classic epic poem is comparable to the ancient method of travelling artists who sang their poems in hexameter.

Pushkin began writing his first major work, Ruslan and Ludmila (1820), a kind of fairy story in verse, in 1817. It was based on Russian folktales told by his old nurse Arina Rodionovna. "On seashore far a green oak towers/ And to it with a gold chain bound/ A learned cat whiles away the hours/ By walking slowly round and round.
