About this listen

From the wildly popular best-selling author of The Keeper of Lost Things comes a surprising and uplifting story about the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, and the magic of chosen family.

Tilly was a bright, outgoing little girl who loved fizzy drinks, naughty words, and liked playing with ghosts and matches. When her beloved father suddenly disappeared, she and her fragile, difficult mother moved into Queenie Malone’s magnificent Paradise Hotel in Brighton, with its endearing and loving family of misfits - including the exuberant and compassionate Queenie herself. But then Tilly was dealt another shattering blow when her mother sent her off to boarding school with little explanation and no warning, and she lost her beloved chosen family.

Now an adult, Tilda has grown into an independent woman still damaged by her mother’s unaccountable cruelty. Wary of people, her only true friend is her dog, Eli. When her estranged mother dies, Tilda returns to Brighton and the home she loved best. With the help of the still-dazzling Queenie, she sets about unraveling the mystery of her exile from The Paradise Hotel, only to discover that her mother was not the woman she thought she knew at all…and that it’s never too late to write your own happy ending.

With Ruth Hogan’s trademark quirky, clever, and life-affirming characters, Queenie Malone’s Paradise Hotel will dazzle listeners and mesmerize them until they reach the surprising twist at the end.

Language!

I am in absolute awe of the way Ruth Hogan uses language. Her prose is vivid, her metaphors and similes quirky, surprising, and absolutely apt. I can't seem to find another author whose writing is so interesting.

Loved it! Engaging and original

This was a great book, and performed very well. I could have listened to it all in one shot! The story was wonderful and full of the little things that make every person's life unique. The things we do to protect each other that no one knows about and might not make sense to anyone but us. I'll definitely be listening to another of Ruth Hogan's books soon!

sweet story but needs more

Based on the book title, it thought we'd hear more about the magical place of Queenie's paradise hotel. it touches on Tilly's time there briefly. I liked the story overall but it all seemed a bit rushed without a lot of development. It could be a bit hard to follow at times. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

I wish Queenie, her hotel and all the residents were there still!

This book could have gone on forever as far as I'm concerned!! The writer is a masterful storyteller. Drawing her characters out lovingly, she has woven a rich and poignant fabric of lives intertwined in pathos and in peace. I marveled at her skill in vividly creating their warm surroundings, their cherished possessions and even their simple yet comforting meals. It was a huge pleasure to laugh and weep as the tale spun within stunningly detailed, keenly observed depiction. I will savor long into the future all the folk in this book. Hopefully this writer has more books written or on the way!!

The narrator/voice actor is truly a gifted artist who crafted multiple individuals with clarity in this tale of many diverse and quirky characters!! I will as well be thinking about Tilda's struggles and triumphs and of all those loving souls who helped her along her winding way in the best manner they could. BRAVO!!☮️
