About this listen

From the wildly popular best-selling author of The Keeper of Lost Things comes a surprising and uplifting story about the complicated relationships between mothers and daughters, and the magic of chosen family.

Tilly was a bright, outgoing little girl who loved fizzy drinks, naughty words, and liked playing with ghosts and matches. When her beloved father suddenly disappeared, she and her fragile, difficult mother moved into Queenie Malone’s magnificent Paradise Hotel in Brighton, with its endearing and loving family of misfits - including the exuberant and compassionate Queenie herself. But then Tilly was dealt another shattering blow when her mother sent her off to boarding school with little explanation and no warning, and she lost her beloved chosen family.

Now an adult, Tilda has grown into an independent woman still damaged by her mother’s unaccountable cruelty. Wary of people, her only true friend is her dog, Eli. When her estranged mother dies, Tilda returns to Brighton and the home she loved best. With the help of the still-dazzling Queenie, she sets about unraveling the mystery of her exile from The Paradise Hotel, only to discover that her mother was not the woman she thought she knew at all…and that it’s never too late to write your own happy ending.

With Ruth Hogan’s trademark quirky, clever, and life-affirming characters, Queenie Malone’s Paradise Hotel will dazzle listeners and mesmerize them until they reach the surprising twist at the end.

Language!

I am in absolute awe of the way Ruth Hogan uses language. Her prose is vivid, her metaphors and similes quirky, surprising, and absolutely apt. I can't seem to find another author whose writing is so interesting.

Loved it! Engaging and original

This was a great book, and performed very well. I could have listened to it all in one shot! The story was wonderful and full of the little things that make every person's life unique. The things we do to protect each other that no one knows about and might not make sense to anyone but us. I'll definitely be listening to another of Ruth Hogan's books soon!

sweet story but needs more

Based on the book title, it thought we'd hear more about the magical place of Queenie's paradise hotel. it touches on Tilly's time there briefly. I liked the story overall but it all seemed a bit rushed without a lot of development. It could be a bit hard to follow at times. Overall, I enjoyed the book.

Interesting story

The narrator brought the story to life. Tilly/Tilda and the cast of characters that made up the story were captivating. Overall an enjoyable listen.

I really loved this book, I think because it is deeply but very quietly moving. The book is thoughtful and honest in its portrayal of interesting people and difficult situations doing their best as they navigate through life. I loved the quirky characters!

Very YA

Queenie Malone is a cute story - much more suited to a 12-14 year old than an adult. The themes of: searching for your parent and my mother never loved me, are ones that have been overdone in kids lit. A little bit of woo woo and seeing dead people and animals that protect you, is also not that original. A pleasant enough book - wish I borrowed it from Libby and didn’t pay Audible for it.

A heartwarming adventure into parts unknown

I have fallen in love with Ruth Hogan's writing. This is the second book if hers I've listened to (Keeper of Small Things was the first) and she did not disappoint. Her writing is so packed with visual and emotional nuances that I'd be tempted to "re-read" both of them, something I rarely do. I've even recommended her work to my daughter-in-law, also an avid reader. AND, Jane Collingwood's ability to voice the various characters is nothing short of astonishing. I know that I would have enjoyed this story of a person searching for the keys to her past in its written form, but Ms. Collingwood's ability to bring each character to life made it all the more enjoyable. I'm off to listen to a chapter or two over again before I start on a new Audible adventure...
