About this listen

Once a spirited, independent woman with a rebellious streak, Masha's life was forever changed by a tragic event 12 years ago. Unable to let go of her grief, she finds comfort in her faithful canine companion Haizum and peace in the quiet lanes of her town's swimming pool. Almost without her realizing it, her life has shuddered to a halt.

It’s only when Masha begins an unlikely friendship with the mysterious Sally Red Shoes, a bag lady with a prodigious voice and a penchant for saying just what she means, that a new world of possibilities opens up: new friendships, new opportunities, and even a chance for new love. For the first time in years, Masha has the chance to start living again. But just as Masha dares to imagine the future, her past comes roaring back....

I loved this book. It’s so creatively written. The theme is tragic, yet the characters are interesting and inspirational- including the dogs. There’s a satiric thread with occasional belly laughs.
Narrator terrific.

A real find!

I love the story of forgiveness, but I guess before that acceptance. I initially thought the ending was too fast, but after setting and reflecting on it, I think it was perfect.

I loved the story of forgiveness held within this book.

This was a study of character development and the performance only enhanced that. There was all kinds of interesting facts about Victorian death rites, cemeteries, poetry, opera...but it did not seem morbid or even dark. The pacing was excellent and stories developed intrinsically. The only problem - for me - was the fact that she took the obvious plot path. I kept hoping that it was going to twist away but I was disappointed. It was handled well..and expediently...but yet, there it was.

Interesting Characters, Excellent Performance

I really loved this story. To be honest though at the first few chapters I almost gave up on it due to the sadness. I’m so glad I didn’t, there was so much joy throughout and it was thought provoking and tender. This is my 3rd book of Ruth Hogan, she’s one of my favorite authors.

Took a bit for me to get the 3 major ladies characters straight. I did like the details of the water temperature and certain details consistently added throughout to level set the character. Interesting comparison of love and loss and the importance of relationships

Surprised at ending

Wanted at least a chapter with the final outcome
With the final characters. Not wanting to spoil it for readers. I’m a bit annoyed!

Left wanting more.

A story of depth and compassion that we can each learn something from. Do you know a Sally Red Shoes? Oh I do hope so!

Pure joy!

The story started with interesting characters and situations. It then started to drag on with Masha revisiting over and over the cemetery. It got a bit hard to finish. Disappointing read after the keeper of lost things. Ruth Hogan is definitely a story teller but this just wasn’t for me.

Got tedious. Perfect narration

Sweet story, clever writing with wonderfully lovable characters. But, why oh why, did the author think she had to include an over abundance of the “f” word? Unnecessary and distracting. Were it not for that I would recommend it to book clubs.’

Sweet Story
