About this listen

Before we go any further, let's get this out of the way. I want you to do three things for me.

One. Do not be offended by anything you read beyond this point.

Two. Leave your inhibitions at the door.

Three, and most important. Everything you see and hear from now on must remain between us....

Catherine, a film student whose sexuality has been recently stirred, finds herself drawn into a secret club where the world's most powerful people meet to explore their deepest, often darkest sexual fantasies. But even as these new experiences open intense new pleasures for Catherine, they also threaten everything she holds dear.

Let Sasha Grey take you inside a private, high-profile sex society where anything and everything can happen.

THE NEXT ANAIS NIN; SASHA GREYS AMAZING FIRST BOOK

SASHA GREYS FIRST NOVEL, THE JULIETTE SOCIETY, IS A SURPRISING TOUR DE FORCE FIRST NOVEL, IN THE FIELD OF EROTIC LITERATURE. WHILE THE OVERALL ARC OF THE BOOK, IS ABOUT MAINTAINING A RELATIONSHIP OF ENDURING VALUE, MS. GREYS NOVEL ARCHES INTO THEMES NOT EXPLORED , OR RARELY SO, IN MAINSTREAM FICTION. THE ORIGINS OF LIFE THROUGH SEX, THE FEELINGS WOMEN HAVE, DURING MOMENTS OF EXTREME SEXUAL AROUSAL OR VULNERABILITY, THE ORCHESTRAL SENSES OF TRANSCENDANCE, WHILE ENGAGING IN GROUP SEX, HAVE BEEN IN HER VERY INTELLIGENT AND CAPAPBLE HANDS, BEEN HANDLED WITH GREAT VIVID AND DESCRIPTIVE PROSE. THEMES SUCH AS ALIENATION OF AFFECTS, BODILY DYSMORPHIC ISSUES, AND OTHER NUEROTIC SYMPTOMS OF THE 21ST CENTURIES MEDIA CULTURE, ARE EXAMINED IN AN HONEST, AND FORTHRIGHT FASTION. I HAVE NEVER HAD ANY WOMAN, EXPLAIN TO ME, THE FEELINGS WOMEN HAVE, AND DESIRE, DURING VARYING SEXUAL ACTS AND SITUATIONS, QUITE SO WELL AS I HAVE SEEN THEM EXPLAINED HERE. IF YOU THOUGHT THIS FORMER PORN STAR, WAS ONLY CAPAPBLE OF WRITING SMUT, GUESS AGAIN. SHE ELEVATES THE ART OF EROTIC LITERATURE, AND DEMONSTRATES A CAPACITY FOR SETTING AND LANGUAGE, FAR SUPERSEDING HER EXPERIENCE IN THE GENRE. I FOUND IT SOME OF THE MOST COMPELLING READING, I HAVE EVER ENGAGED IN. IS SHE ANOTHER HENRY MILLER? THIS IS FOR FUTURE READERS TO DETERMINE, BUT I AM CERTAIN, SHE IS OFF TO A FANTASTIC START.

A little weird

A little astonishing, a little shocking, a little boring even. I could have done without, though.

Captivating with Brilliant References

I don’t understand the negative reviews. The author is eloquent and captivating with her references to film, history and science.

She’s So Intellectual

On YouTube years ago I saw a girl commenting on pornography. She was so intellectual and well spoken that I found myself a bit smitten. Then I found out she was an adult actress and I loved her performances. I loved the fact that she enjoyed sex and her sexuality. I also loved that dark side of her which seemed like a mirror to mine. Now onto the book...it’s similar to Van Halen’s “Diver Down” album. That album is much deeper than what’s on the surface. You can enjoy it as good music, but to really enjoy it you have to go deeper. And that depth requires an effort. Any Rand said that characters in a novel don’t necessarily reflect the personality of the author. I disagree. If you really read or in my case listen to the book you’ll see Sasha’s depth. This book is more than just about sex. Sasha is much more than just a pretty face. She has a gorgeous mind and I think she’s extremely brave for presenting it to the world to be judged. I’ve been trying to write a novel for years but my fear of it not being good enough has prevented me from publishing. It’s too dark. Too suicidal. Too much of me. Moving on...her narration is great. In her voice you can hear the cute little girl and the intelligent woman. She has two faces...just like Janus.

Has Sasha Grey lost her passion or sex?

What disappointed you about The Juliette Society?

Everything. The story was incoherent and the main character was insufferable. The titular society barely even shows up and the sex is so clinical and uninspired that it makes me wonder is Sasha Grey has lost all passion for the act.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sasha Grey again?

Narrated by? Sure. Sasha has this abbrasive New York-eque accent that would lend itself to certain characters pretty well.

Written by? No. This book just made me feel sad. If this is what sex and eroticism are like for a pornstar then so much for my day dream of making that my 9-5.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sasha Grey?

Dr. Stephen Hawking? Someone less robotic who knows when a scene requires emotion. Sasha conveys asking a guy for anal sex, asking after a missing friend and discussing the weather in the same dull monotone.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Sadness. Usually a poorly written book that doesn't deliver on the description from the book cover makes me angry but this just gave me such a depressing insight into Sasha Grey's attitude towards sex that I couldn't feel angry.

Any additional comments?

Perhaps I seem to be acting like an armchair psychologist here but I'm not JUDGING Sasha Grey...I'm acting like the main character of this book a pretentious film student who sits around idly psycho-analyzing people.

It's kinda boring and monotone

If a professional voice actor was the narrator it would probably be a lot more entertaining.

Not so great

Would you try another book from Sasha Grey and/or Sasha Grey?

No I would no. Sasha Grey only mentioned the Juliette Society a few times in passing. It did not seem that the story line was thought out.

Would you ever listen to anything by Sasha Grey again?

Probably not. There was no depth to the story. I would not anticipate her stories would improve based on how poorly this one was written.

How could the performance have been better?

The story could have been thought out better. It seemed very repetitive.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

This book sparked absolutely no reaction in maybe. Well maybe boredom. I would expect a former porn star to be able to write a better book about sexual escapades.
