Dr. Aaron Berkowitz is a leading voice in neurology education and global health. He serves as a Professor of Neurology at University of California San Francisco (UCSF), Health and Policy Advisor in Neurology to Partners In Health (PIH), and a Senior Specialist Consultant to Doctors Without Borders. He has previously served as Director of the Global Neurology Program at Brigham and Women's Hospital and an Associate Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. In One by One by One, he tells the story of his work with PIH to bring a young man with a large brain tumor from rural Haiti to Boston for brain surgery, tracing the triumphs, tragedies, and confusing spaces in between from the front lines of the pursuit to achieve global health equity–one patient at a time. Dr. Berkowitz has worked with colleagues in Haiti, Malawi, Navajo Nation, Vietnam, and Boston's Healthcare for the Homeless to improve access to neurologic care and neurology education where it is limited or non-existent. His work was recognized by the Mridha Spirit of Neurology Humanitarian Award from the American Brain Foundation in 2018 and the Kenneth Viste Patient Advocate of the Year Award from the American Academy of Neurology in 2019. A devoted neurology educator, he designed and directed the neurology/neuroanatomy course for first-year medical students at Harvard Medical School and is a frequent contributor to the popular Clinical Problem Solvers podcast. His textbook Clinical Neurology and Neuroanatomy: A Localization-Based Approach, covers clinically relevant neuroanatomy, neurologic localization, and the clinical practice of diagnosis and treatment in neurology in a concise volume written in a clear, logical, practical style.
