As patients we all deserve to have excellent doctors we can trust. I am a physician, educator and researcher dedicated to making sure this happens. I love teaching medical students, residents and colleagues how to become masterful clinicians by sharpening their clinical and interpersonal skills and professionalism. As a woman, mother, daughter, wife, sister, cousin and friend I have had enough experience with the health care system as a patient to know that we could be doing a much better job. Writing about training, assessing and remediating physicians and trainees is my way of making the world a little bit better, safer and healthier. Here is my pedigree. From 2019 to 2024 I was the Steven and Shelagh Roell Endowed Chair and Director of the Robert D. and Patricia E. Kern Institute for the Transformation of Medical Education at the Medical College of Wisconsin. In this position I was responsible for carrying out innovation and scholarship that ensured that medical training prepared both physicians to provide the excellent health care the public will need tomorrow. Prior to moving to Wisconsin in September 2019, I had been at NYU Grossman School of Medicine for over 30 years where among other positions I held the Gold Professorship of Humanism and Professionalism and directed the Program on Professional Development Assessment and Outcomes within the Office of Medical Education and a research group we lovingly called ROMEO, which stands for Research on Medical Education Outcomes. I am a founding Fellow of the American Academy on Communication in Healthcare and have received a number of teaching awards as well as the SGIM National Award for Scholarship in Medical Education in 2008. Along with many colleagues, and as a primary care physician and medical education researcher I worked with students, residents and colleagues who needed extra support to become the best health care professionals possible.
