Andy was born and brought up in Kent. He read English Literature at the University of Sheffield and, within 48 hours of arriving in Sheffield, met the girl he would fall in love with and marry. In doing so, he also fell in love with the North, and has lived there ever since. After university, Andy had a range of jobs totally unrelated to writing: call centre worker; trainee accountant (worst year of his life); commercial analyst; energy trader in a power station... before finally becoming a primary school teacher. He now lives in North Yorkshire and works in Teesside as a primary school head teacher. He loves reading, surfing (which he's terrible at), running, gardening and basically being outdoors as much as possible. Lily Grim and the City of Undone won The Hachette Children’s Novel Award in 2021. In 2022, Andy also won fourth place in the ‘person who looks most like their dog’ category at his local village Jubilee celebrations (and he doesn’t even have a dog, so he had to borrow one).
