Anne F. Hyde was born in St. Louis and moved west to Reno, Nevada. Great teachers taught her about the Donner Party, Comstock Lode mining accidents, and amazing Paiute stories. Wanting to know more, she went to college in Massachusetts and graduate school in California to study the frontier and the U.S. West. She has worked at three universities, has three children, and has had more than three dogs. Now she teaches and writes at the University of Oklahoma, where she has learned so much about mixed-descent families and difficult, but always fascinating, western stories.
