As a wildlife researcher, Brooke Bessesen studies a variety of animal species. Since 2010, she has been conducting marine studies in Golfo Dulce, Costa Rica. Most recently, her work with sea snakes led to the naming a subspecies. Brooke brings her extensive animal experience and knowledge to the writing table. For her newest book—about the plight of a tiny porpoise, entitled "Vaquita: Science, Politics, and Crime in the Sea of Cortez," she takes us on a heartfelt journey across the Mexico’s border to uncover the extraordinary story of the world’s most endangered marine mammal. Her four picture books have received many honors and awards. "Zachary Z. Packrat Backpacks the Grand Canyon" (2014) and "Zachary Z. Packrat and His Amazing Collections" (2008) were illustrated by nationally syndicated cartoonist Jenny Campbell. "Look Who Lives in the Ocean!" (2009) and "Look Who Lives in the Desert!" (2004), were illustrated by Brooke herself. She also authored the popular "Arizona Highways Wildlife Guide." After working many years at the Phoenix Zoo animal hospital as a certified veterinary technician, she continues to use her medical skills, working on both the Animal Rescue Team of The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) and with Liberty Wildlife. When not afield or writing, Brooke shares her passions with a wide range of audiences in school libraries, conference halls, and auditoriums.
