BRUCE BUGBEE | Bio
Bruce Bugbee was raised in Southern California in an unchurched family. After making his commitment to Christ at the age of 18, he participated in a number of ministries: The Crystal Cathedral, Calvary Chapel, Young Life, the Presbyterian Church, Covenant Church, Reformed Church, South Coast Community Church and Willow Creek Community Church. He has led in the local church, para-church, regional, and denominational positions.
Following a call into full-time ministry, he pursued a major in Religious Studies at Westmont College (Santa Barbara, CA) and a Masters of Divinity Degree at Fuller Theological Seminary (Pasadena, CA). His emphasis has been on church renewal, people placement, leadership development, and ministry development. He was ordained in the Reformed Church in America (1979).
Bruce served as a youth pastor in several California churches for 12 years (1970-82) before accepting the Director of Area Youth Ministries position in the regional office of the Reformed Church located in Orange City, Iowa (1982-86). After serving over 200 rural, suburban and metropolitan churches in the western United States and Canada, he became the Pastoral Care Director and Director of the Network Ministry at Willow Creek Community Church (1986-93) where he personally led over 10,000 people to discover their ministry passions, spiritual gifts and relational style, guiding them into meaningful places of service. He also provided leadership and coordination for Willow Creek's Internship program to over 40 full-time full-year leaders and church planters.
In June of 1993, Bruce founded Network Ministries International. Its purpose is to support the ministry of local churches, parachurch organizations and the mission of Christian organizations in the effective and efficient use of God's people for loving service to one another and the world. He trains and coaches a variety of churches, like Saddleback Community Church, St. Andrews Presbyterian, Geneva Presbyterian, New Life Community Church, CrossPoint, Christ Community Church, and others.
Bruce is the author of What You Do Best (Zondervan, 1995/2022). It presents simple principles for personal ministry effectiveness. It has been the topic for radio interviews and articles. Due to its popularity, he updated and expanded it in 2005 and again in 2022. It is perfect for individuals, small group settings, and new members. It is available in print, audible, and ebook with online RIGHT4 YOU profile assessments. Also available in Spanish.
Bruce coauthored the Gold Medallion Award winning process called Network: The Right People In The Right Places For The Right Reasons (Zondervan, 1994 / Revised 2005). Network is a biblically based approach to the identification of a believer's spiritual gifts, life passions and relational style. It is a comprehensive system and assessment process that equips believers to better understanding who God has made them to be in order to make their unique contribution in a meaningful place of service. Bruce has personally lead over 50,000 staff and volunteers through the Network process, while close to another two million believers have experienced Network in thousands of churches in 15 languages around the world.
Using his leadership, wisdom and administration gifts, he has effectively communicated and demonstrated his passion for equipping leaders and building effective ministry teams across large and small churches, regions and denominations.
His book, Discover Your Spiritual Gifts the Network Way (Zondervan, 2005) is acclaimed as the best resource for spiritual gift discovery. It provides four spiritual gift assessments from different perspectives and a ministry fit assessment tool.
Don Cousins and Bruce Bugbee coauthored Experiencing Leadershift (Shift Publishing/Amazon). This revolutionary resource concentrates on the ability of equipping leaders to identify, attract, lead and develop leaders and ministry teams. It assists ministry leaders to be people equippers, not just program planners and event coordinators. They learn to Call, Connect, Coach and Change.
Since 2003, Bruce has also served as the Regional Executive for the Far West Region of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). In this part-time position, he serves over 100 churches in the western states. His focus is on leadership development, congregational vitality, and pastoral transitions. He is also serving other prevailing organizations that are seeking to be equipping ministries to have a greater kingdom impact.
Bruce has four children and twelve grandkids. He lives in Ladera Ranch, California.
