Bruce Roseland is the 8th Poet Laureate of South Dakota (2023-2027). Roseland refers to himself as a prairie poet. His poetry describes people, work and nature in current-day western rural life. Roseland's poems often reveal the sacred in relationships between the land, the life it supports and those who are its stewards. His recent work describes the need to conserve our rapidly disappearing native grasslands. Roseland believes poems are little stories about what matters to us, and that these stories connect us, make it possible for us to see each other. His goal as Poet Laureate is to make poetry accessible, to encourage folks from all walks of life to write, read their poetry publicly and share their work with other writers and their communities. Bruce Roseland is the author of eight books of free verse poetry and has won four national awards, including The Last Buffalo, 2006 (2007 Wrangler Award for Excellence in Western Literature & Media, Poetry); A Prairie Prayer, 2008 (2009 Will Rogers Medallion in Cowboy Poetry); Church of the Holy Sunrise, 2012; Song for My Mother, 2014; Gift of Moments, 2016; Cowman, 2018 (2019 Will Rogers Medallion in Cowboy Poetry); Heart of the Prairie, 2021 (2022 Will Rogers Medallion in Cowboy Poetry); and Earl's Own Dakota Odyssey, 2024. Roseland is a fourth-generation cattleman who grew up on a ranch in north central South Dakota. He left the family ranch to obtain a Masters in Sociology from the University of North Dakota, 1980. He returned to the land to raise cattle, and, record his experiences of working western life in poems. Roseland joined the South Dakota State Poetry Society and was elected its President for three terms. He is a SD Humanities Scholar. Roseland still works his ranch outside of Seneca, South Dakota. He enjoys spending time in his Black Hills Spearfish home when cows and crops permit. Bruce Roseland's books are available on Amazon.
