I was born in rural Louisiana, and raised in Chicago, Illinois. I have been enamored of reading for as long as I can remember. Even as a small child, I enjoyed my mother’s stories, later embellishing them with gusto when I told them to friends. Once my formal education began and I could decipher the meaning of words beyond my “Dick and Jane’ reader, I lost myself in the world of books. I discovered Edgar Allen Poe in the sixth grade when my teacher lowered the window shades, cocooned us in the dim shadows of the room and mesmerized us with his words. I was hooked. Later that year I would win my first award for writing. The love of horror both understated and overt would remain with me. Fan fiction and short stories would take me through the awkward years of puberty. At the behest of my English teacher, when I was sixteen, I became a member of Urban Gateways Writer’s Workshop for two years. This same teacher would be the first to identify my style of writing, liberating me to shape words and craft them as my own. My sun orbits have been a tumultuous journey through a passionate life which has included raising children, a happy marriage, 25 years of teaching and implementing an enrichment program for underserved children on the west side of Chicago. In this latter season of my existence, I embarked on the road to a master’s degree in fiction writing from Columbia College Chicago. My graduate thesis evolved into my first novel, The Knowing. I currently reside in Chicago and draw my stories from the past, present and reimagined future of the created people surging around inside my head. My ancestors and the roads they traveled, the community that nurtured and sustained me and the spirits that dwell both here and beyond this world inform my writing. My work blends the natural, the supernatural and the spirit realm within the reality of the world in which we exist. I can generally be found writing at home in the company of my family and two crazy cats.
