Chitra Soundar is an internationally published, award-winning author of children’s books, screenwriter and an oral storyteller. She has published over twenty picture books worldwide and also writes chapter books, poetry and theatre for kids, pushing the tally to over 60. She has also written a number of audio stories that you can listen to. Her books have been nominated and shortlisted for multiple awards in the UK and US including the Kate Greenaway Medal for Illustration, Surrey Children’s Book Award and Inclusive Book Awards. She loves visiting schools, libraries and festivals with her books and stories. Chitra is the creator of Nikhil & Jay, a BBC preschool sitcom now available to watch on BBC iplayer. She is the founder of The Colourful Bookshelf, a curated list of children’s books by British writers and illustrators of colour and the co-founder of SAILFest UK, a festival that celebrates British South Asian illustration and literature. Chitra Soundar is an avid reader of funny mysteries, wordplay and puns and loves writing them too. Chitra grew up in Chennai, India and she was always interested in oral storytelling and reading. When she was at school, she has competed and won in many oral storytelling and writing competitions too. She grew up play-acting and telling stories and has even been a dance extra in a movie in South India. Nowadays Chitra lives in London where in her writing room, she makes up stories for books and TV. She loves to cook, go on walks, listen to podcasts (ahem!) and spend time with her nephews. When she is out and about, Chitra always carries a little notebook with her to jot down ideas and write short poems. Not just for children, Chitra also writes for grown-ups – she has written plays, comedy and satire and short stories for grown-ups.
