Chris Funk is an international expert on climate extremes, early warning systems, climate change, and humanitarian Earth System science. As Director of the University of California, Santa Barbara’s Climate Hazards Center (chc.ucsb.edu), he helps develop satellite observations and climate predictions that help save lives and livelihoods and prevent famine. With over 186 publications and ~10,000 citations, Chris translates Earth Science discoveries into actionable information. His research has been featured in Science, on TV, in mainstream print media, and on the radio. Two of his books have been nominated for AAP PROSE awards: "Climate Extremes: Patterns and Mechanisms", by S-Y Simon Wang, Jin-Ho Yoon, Chris Funk and Robert R. Gillies (2018) and "Drought Early Warning and Forecasting: Theory and Practice" by Chris and Shraddhanand Shukla (2020). His latest work (Cambridge Press) "Drought, Flood, Fire: How Climate Change Contributes to Catastrophes". On a daily basis, Chris and his collaborators develop and apply new science that leverages the latest satellite and climate model information to help us cope with our increasingly extreme climate. This work is exciting, but it also provides a unique and concerning perspective that reveals how climate change is hurting people now.
