Clare is on a mission that she knows is not impossible. She is committed to help seasoned nurses reset and reconnect to their call to service and, based on a study with critical care nurses, quality listening is the first step. Deep listening can lead to a deep connection. Deep connection can lead to better patient care. That connection can be a place of respite in the middle of a chaotic day. Deep listening can be restorative. Hospitals, agencies and assisted care facilities hire Dr. Clare to help their experienced nurses remember their call to service which improves patient outcomes and medicare reimbursement rates. You may ask why Rev. Dr. Clare Biedenharn cares about you and your nursing practice. She is a board certified chaplain with over two decades of experience in industrial, organ donation and critical care settings. Dr. Clare is the chaplain with a hard hat and a soft heart. Through her years of hands-on experience, Clare came to embrace the belief that intentional listening is an essential element of care. That idea formed the foundation for her study with critical care nurses in New Orleans. And it is her belief that deep listening can be an essential part of binding the wounds of nurses and all health care workers who are on the COVID front lines. Life-long learner is a moniker claimed by Clare and she holds degrees in spiritual direction (M.A. and DMin) from Garrett Theological Seminary and an Ed.S. in Adult Learning from the University of Southern Mississippi with a focus on spirituality in the hospital setting. She is Board Certified through Association of Professional Chaplains and holds a Palliative Care Chaplaincy Specialty certificate from California State University Institute for Palliative Care. In addition, Clare is a United Methodist minister. Clare called on every skill at her disposal as she cared for her husband James. He succumbed to a rare thymic cancer in 2018 after a four-year battle. James encouraged her to return to her listening project after his death and so she has. She has two adult sons, Jay and Robert, who were each wise enough to marry smart and loving women. Four wonderful grandchildren bless her life.
