I grew up in South East London and moved to the Birmingham suburbs as a teenager. I loved writing but I didn’t think I was the kind of person who could be an author, so I ended up doing jobs that involved writing in other ways. I worked in communications in politics and the charity sector, and although I always had bits of stories going round in my head I never paid much attention to them. It wasn’t until I had my family that I realised how much I missed creative writing and storytelling. Eventually I did an MA in Writing for Young People at Bath Spa University and wrote my first book The Year of The Rat while on the course. I have since worked as a creative writing lecturer and manuscript tutor at Bath Spa and am currently a Royal Literary Fund Writing Fellow. I live in Bath, surrounded by teenagers, animals and books.
