Danforth (otherwise known as Dan) Slater was born and grew up in the UK, and probably because of a disastrous month-long Interrail trip while at studying Chemical Engineering at Uni, only caught the travelling bug after a trip to India for a wedding in 1998. Despite this involving three months of vomiting, diarrhoea, filth and poverty (on the part of the author), he was hooked, and made subsequent trips to the Middle East in 1999, Central America in 2001 and South America & Southern Africa in 2003. It was while living in London after that last sojourn, and working as an archaeologist, that Dan first put pen to paper, writing a series of travel stories for the Australian Times, a free newspaper for expat Aussies. Having met a Namibian firecracker in Mexico and fallen in love, the two of them decided to move to Cape Town via an arduous, five month-long journey from Cairo to the Cape on public transport. Dan decided this was the perfect excuse to promote his scribblings to the book format, producing his first opus, This is Not a Holiday. After three years living on the edge, the couple (now engaged) made another move, this time to Australia, their path through Southeast Asia enshrined forever in the pages of Dan's second book, March of the Warmdüschers. Settled in Sydney, Dan's writing really took off, and his became a well-known moniker in the pages of Australia's outdoor and travel magazines. After five years, Dan took the trip around the Caribbean Sea with his father that would become Black Dog, Blue Sea. Still in Sydney, and with many more trips under his belt, Dan and (now wife) Gerda are still living the dream - travelling, hiking, cycling, canyoning and paddling as often as they can, with an eye on New Zealand as their next home, a move which will certainly involve an epic trip through Asia worthy of closing the Warmdüscher Trilogy. As of 2023, Dan has visited 114 countries, but also enjoys making short horror films, painting skyscrapers reflected in other skyscrapers , and going to the pub with his mates.
