“Daniel Boyd” is the pen name of a veteran police officer who served for twenty-five years in central Ohio, from street cop to Chief of Police, then went on to work another twenty years as a driver for the Red Cross, taking elderly and disabled people to medical appointments. He recalls, "Police work taught me a lot, some of it pretty harsh, and a few of the folks I met might think they see themselves in my books. But I never really learned about people until they shared their lives with me on those trips to dialysis, cancer treatments, and more at the Red Cross." Boyd's novel, AESOP'S TRAVELS (2023) won the 2024 Spur Award for Best Traditional Novel from the Western Writers of America. His first novel, ‘NADA (2010 & republished 2023) was a finalist for a Spur Award for Best First Novel. Boyd says, "When I wrote 'NADA I recalled a lot of stories about buried treasure and the dangers of getting it out. It seems in most of them the hero hooks up with a shifty partner who is useful but unreliable, and generally betrays him, bringing things to an end. I wondered what the story might sound like if it were told by the shifty partner, and 'NADA is the result." Other tales of adventure by Boyd include HAMLET AMONG THE PIRATES (2024), GONE TO GRAVEYARDS: a Streak Wilson Story (2023), THE DEVIL & STREAK WILSON (2020), and EASY DEATH (2014). Now fully retired and enjoying life with his wife in central Ohio, Boyd spends his time writing, watching "old weird movies" studying HAMLET, and making tobacco pipes in his spare time. He concludes, "With no marketable skills, not smart enough to steal, and too ugly to work in Radio, the only thing left for me was writing."
