David Shoalts of The Globe and Mail has been one of Canada’s leading hockey writers, covering the Toronto Maple Leafs and the National Hockey League, since 1989. In 2003, he was promoted to hockey columnist. He has been entertaining and informing hockey fans ever since, not only through the Globe and Mail but also on television and radio. He is also the author of a book of humour, Tales From The Toronto Maple Leafs Locker Room, and co-author with William Houston of Greed and Glory, The Fall of Hockey Czar Alan Eagleson. In 2009, Shoalts and his Globe and Mail colleague, Paul Waldie, were named sports writers of the year by Sports Media Canada, the Canadian chapter of International Sports Press Association, the most respected association of sports journalists in the world. Shoalts and Waldie were honoured for their work in exposing the severe financial problems of the Phoenix Coyotes despite strong denials from the NHL’s head office. Shoalts developed the story in 2008 and was later joined by Waldie when BlackBerry billionaire Jim Balsillie tried to buy the Coyotes and move them to Hamilton. Shoalts and Waldie kept the Globe and Mail far ahead of the competition as the story moved into the U.S. courts and became the biggest hockey story of 2009. By 2013, Shoalts moved into writing about sports business and the sports media for The Globe and Mail. He also acted on a long interest in comedy by taking a course in stand-up comedy and in early 2016 landed his first club engagement after just three public performances.
