In decades spent writing dozens of national magazine articles describing adventures to remote destinations in all oceans of the world in pursuit of game fish, Doug Olander gained a loyal base of readers. He served as editor-in-chief of the widely respected publication, Sport Fishing, from the mid90s until 2019. Now, Olander has begun applying his considerable writing skills to fiction, completing his first offbeat thriller, Catagion, in the summer of 2022. Although he manages to stay busier than he’d like these days as a contributing editor or writer for various magazines, Olander is hard at work on an ambitious second thriller that’s he titled, Snakebit. Set in central Florida, folks get a bit nervous when it turns out that someone is planting live rattlesnakes where they can surprise — and strike — random victims. A frazzled single mom, as detective assigned to the case, has to start putting together clues to find the killer who quickly earns the epithet “the snake charmer” before he can carry out a much bigger attack. The author continues to pursue his love of kayak fishing, spending as many days each month in his Hobie kayak as his schedule and the weather will allow, fishing Florida’s Atlantic and Gulf coasts and lakes, fending off gators and manatees (and keeping an eye out for The Florida Man, the state’s mythical equivalent of bigfoot).
