Douglas Garland, M.D. practiced orthopedic surgery for 37 years in Southern California. In addition to serving as Medical Director of their total joint service at his local hospital for five years, he served as chief of four service units including spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury. Doug was also a Clinical Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Southern California. He presently resides on the California central coast with his wife, Cindy. From the Publisher: Doug's mission is to inspire people to become tall poppies and in doing so, mentally prepare themselves for being cut. You have to be a tall poppy to be cut, so being cut down is validation you've achieved more than your peers (namely the ones who cut you down knowingly or unknowingly). One reason Doug's work resonated with me so much is that it revealed my own 'fear of success' which I never understood. I saw that my need to be liked often caused me to fall short of my potential and downplay my achievements (for fear of standing out and being cut down by my peers).
