E. J. Levy's novel, THE CAPE DOCTOR, based on the life of Dr. James Barry (who was born Margaret Ann Bulkley circa 1789), won a 2022 CO Book Award and 2024 Prix Libr'a Nous for Best Foreign Fiction. Her writing has appeared in The Paris Review, Best American Essays, Salon, Rumpus, and The New York Times, among other places, and has won a Pushcart Prize, among other honors. She edited Tasting Life Twice: Literary Lesbian Fiction by New American Writers, which won the Lambda Literary Award. Her debut story-collection, Love, In Theory, won the 2012 Flannery O'Connor Award, a 2012 ForeWord Book of the Year Award, and the 2014 GLCA New Writers Award (given previously to Alice Munro, Louise Erdrich, Richard Ford, and Mary Szybist, for their first books); it was named a 2013 Kirkus Best Indie Book of the Year and called "a brilliant debut" by Cheryl Strayed. A French edition of her stories, translate by Celine Leroy, was published in 2015 by Editions Rivages.
