Edilene Afonso hails from the northeast of Brazil, a small town called Cajueiro in the state of Alagoas. Growing up on a farm, she developed a deep love for books and travel, often collecting travel magazines and dreaming of a future where she would explore the world, learn new languages, and write a book. Her passion for reading and writing was nurtured by her father, who shared his love for literature by reading to her as a child. At 18, Edilene left her small town after finishing high school and moved to São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil, to pursue her dreams. Following her passion for travel, she earned a bachelor's degree in Tourism Management. In 2009, she moved to the United States for the first time as an exchange student, spending two incredible years in Washington, D.C., where she traveled across the States, immersed herself in American culture, and made lifelong friends. After her exchange program ended, Edilene returned to Brazil but soon felt the call to explore the world again. She took a job with a cruise line, where she spent three years traveling to 35 countries, learning four languages, and having the experience of a lifetime. In 2015, she moved back to the United States, got married, and became a mother to twin boys, one of whom was diagnosed with autism. Inspired by her son’s journey, Edilene rediscovered her passion for writing and authored her first children's book, Super A: Autism is My Super Power. The book is deeply rooted in her real-life experiences of raising a nonverbal child with autism. Through her research, Edilene realized the lack of books specifically for children with autism, particularly in places like Brazil. This led her to dedicate much of her time to writing books that raise autism awareness, support the autistic community, and make a positive impact in their lives. While she plans to write more books about her own journey and life experiences, her current focus is on gifting the autistic community with her heartfelt messages.
