This bio is not just about me as this book is not just mine. It is first and foremost my father’s book. My father, Dr. Eli Goldratt, was an internationally recognized leader in the development of new management concepts and an educator to numerous organizations including some of the world’s largest corporations. He wrote his first book almost 40 years ago. That book, The Goal, has been read by millions of people and is still considered one of the world’s most influential business management books. Over the years, he kept developing the principles of managing production but the core concepts remained the same as he had described them in The Goal. Written as an easy-to-read novel and known as his introduction to the Theory of Constraints, The Goal remains a worldwide bestseller. When Goldratt started to develop the Theory of Constraint’s application for project management, he published yet another business novel, Critical Chain. This book is mainly about the mechanics of managing single projects. Halfway through writing it he started sensing that the mechanics were just one piece of the puzzle and probably a side one. The core is managing the flow in multi-project environments. He incorporated his early thoughts into Critical Chain and decided that one day he will either rewrite it or write a new book. Goldratt kept developing the rules of flow, realizing more and more the simplicity and depth of these amazing principals that are relevant to every project environment. He kept saying the time will come for him to write about it, but he ran out of time. He passed away in 2011 and his rules of flow remained known to only a few. I am an Organizational Psychologist, living on the borderline between the individual and organizations. For the past 30 years I have been practicing and teaching applications of the Theory of Constraints for individuals around the world, but more than anything I excel at designing training materials. I was part of my father’s inner circle, assisting him with writing his other business novels and even writing one book together with him, his life philosophy book called The Choice. On the tenth anniversary of his passing, I decided to pick up the ball and write the book he didn’t get to write. I know how he would have liked to write this book and I stayed loyal to his style. With the help of the world’s leading experts, I made sure that every example in the book is based on real life implementations. Those who are interested in reading about the mechanics of projects are still welcome to read Critical Chain. But now, finally, Goldratt’s Rules of Flow, my father’s introduction to Project Management, is available.
