Elizabeth Bailey is a patient advocate whose mission is to help patients and their families safely navigate hospitalizations. Her work as an advocate began as a direct result of her family’s experience during an avoidable medical tragedy that befell her father which resulted in a long hospitalization. Her very active father never fully recovered. It was after her father’s discharge from the hospital and during his long recovery that she embarked on a major career change - leaving the music/film business to focus on patient advocacy. She began working on The Patient’s Checklist while enrolling at Sarah Lawrence College where she completed studies for a Master's in Health Advocacy. As a producer, director, and VP of music video production for several major record labels, she used checklists to oversee hundreds of music videos for a wide range of artists including Whitney Houston, Sheryl Crow, Patti Smith, Aretha Franklin, Metallica and Rod Stewart among others. While helping her father through his long hospitalization that was the result of medication errors and failures in communication, she had an insight that her easy-to-use film production checklists could be adapted to help patients and families more effectively partner with their providers to get better, safer care during a hospital stay. As she has often said her father’s hospital room felt like the worst run film set she had ever been on. She adapted her production checklists to create a user friendly, easily referenced family hospital production guide. Elizabeth was born in New York City and has lived there all her life. She grew up in Greenwich Village, the middle of three girls, in a small apartment across the street from Washington Square Park during the tumultuous but exciting 60’s and 70’s. From a young age, books, movies, music and politics were her passions and all have informed her later advocacy work which focuses on preserving the patient’s humanity and protecting the patient's safety during any hospital stay.
