Ellen Wiles is a writer of fiction and non-fiction, and teaches creative writing at the University of Exeter. The Invisible Crowd (HarperCollins, 2017), Ellen's debut novel, is a multi-voice story about the asylum system in the UK, narrated by Yonas, an Eritrean refugee, and lots of different people he meets on his quest for leave to remain. It was inspired by her previous work as a human rights barrister. It was awarded a Victor Turner Prize and was a Guardian Readers' book of the year. Saffron Shadows and Salvaged Scripts: Literary Life in Myanmar Under Censorship and in Transition (Columbia University Press, 2015) is the first book to explore the Burmese literary culture, over five decades of censorship. It includes new translations of short stories, poems, and memoir, accompanied by interviews with authors about their extraordinary lives and daring strategies to publish their writing, even under threat of imprisonment. Live Literature: the experience and cultural value of literary performance events from salons to festivals (Palgrave, 2021) is the first book to explore the reasons for the popularity of literary events in 21st century literary culture. It includes experiential literary ethnographies of events as varied as the Hay Festival and the Polari Salon, an LGBTQ+ literary event. Ellen writes and produces literary audio as well as books, and makes sound stories for organisations such as the National Trust. Before becoming a professional writer, she practised as a human rights barrister for seven years at a London chambers, and she has worked on human rights legal projects in Thailand, Myanmar and Botswana. She has a degree in Music from the University of Oxford, Masters degrees in Human Rights Law and Creative Writing, and a PhD in literary anthropology.
