Born in Japan and raised in Vancouver, BC, Canada, Eriko is a former Reuters reporter and photographer who now writes and translates at home. When an old friend told her one day that his language skills weren't good enough to read a story she'd written in English, a light bulb went off in her head. Okay, instead of writing everything in English, I'll do it in English AND Japanese so the languages can supplement one another. The "bilingual storytelling" is an initiative that she hopes can help people catch the text that's foreign to them subliminally so they can follow the story and gradually get the hang of it from the context. It's similar to the way Eriko learned Japanese while growing up - taking her parents' books and skimming over all the kanji.
