My life began in Berlin 1942 near the Reichstag and the Brandenburg Gate. Bombed out of our apartment, in 1945 my mother, grandmother and I fled the city. My father, a fighter pilot, had been shot down and killed in 1943. Only my grandfather stayed behind in the ruins of Berlin to serve as doctor. I spent a good part of my life moving between different countries and cities, a citizen of nowhere. But now I am settled in South Bend, Indiana where, I like to think, I have found a balance between being a stranger and belonging. On this journey I have learnt that we need both to feel deeply and to understand the buried layers of history, family, and place that still are part of us. I believe such an accounting of our personal and national past will help us live together with compassion and tolerance. Perhaps, a story like mine can help us. My PhD is from the University of London. I am author of eight books and over forty articles. Until retirement I taught at US universities and abroad. I have won a number of awards for my writing and community engagement. Discover more at gabriellerobinson.com.
