Dr Gay Marris is a retired scientist. She grew up in the suburbs of 1960s London. Back then, the local high street had a saddlers, a seed merchant, and a fishmongers. No coffee shops, but more than one place to buy a galvanised bucket. Atbara Avenue, where A Curtain Twitcher's Book of Murder is set, is inspired by similar streets in Teddington and Ealing. Gay's childhood fitted the model of its time: A dad who went to work with a briefcase, a house-proud mum, two siblings, and a black and white telly upon which to watch Animal Magic. From a young age, she had a profound curiosity about nature. Many formative hours were spent in the company of tadpoles, caterpillars, and other wildlife gathered on garden safaris. Time well spent. She went on to study at Dundee University, was awarded a degree in Zoology (1st class honours) and, later, a doctorate. Her research career focussed on insect ecology, parasites, and honey bee health. Perhaps because she spent so much of her professional life observing tiny interactions between tiny creatures, her fictional work explores the minutiae of human conduct: what makes us tick.
