Grant Welker is a reporter for the The Sun newspaper in Lowell, Mass., covering Lowell, the fourth-largest city in Massachusetts. Grant’s news coverage of the Market Basket saga for The Sun earned him a first-place business-reporting award from the New England Newspaper & Press Association in 2014, and a second-place business-reporting award from NENPA in 2013. Past business-reporting awards include NENPA honors and a first-place New England Associated Press News Executives Association award for closure of the A.J. Wright clothing chain in 2010; and a NENPA and GateHouse Team Project of the Year awards for closure of the Quaker Fabric textile mill in 2007. Grant has also received journalism honors for education, general news, environmental, transportation, social-issue and government reporting. Grant has a bachelor’s of arts degree in journalism from the University of Connecticut, the only journalism program in New England accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications.
