In a multi-award-winning career spanning more than 25 years, Gregg Masuak has proved himself a writer-director of magnetic and exceptional vision, collaborating with some of the world’s best-loved music, film and TV stars and brands. Canadian-born, Australian-raised Masuak shot straight out of film school as a qualified cinematographer with a BA in Communications and headed for London, to him the very epicentre of creativity. With impressive accolades, his avant-garde indie shorts caught the eye of savvy music executives and he was soon one of London’s most sought-after music video directors, creating iconic clips for global artists including the Spice Girls, Kylie Minogue, Take That and Celine Dion. Top international ad agencies were next to beat a path to Masuak’s door, seeking the idiosyncratic, immaculately crafted visions he had made his signature. High-profile campaigns for clients as diverse as Barclays Bank, Levi’s, easyJet and NEC followed, his under-the-radar theatre training coming into play as he became well known for his ease directing superstars such as Salma Hayek, Courtney Cox and Penelope Cruz. Also an accomplished producer, editor, art director and designer, Masuak continues to broaden his ambitions and expertise, honing a distinctive talent for gently subverting and reinvigorating familiar commercial formats. He has written and published the maverick self-help manual The Spiritual Slob and is also developing an accompanying TV series in which he both directs and stars. He has staged two theatre versions of his darkly comic Flycatcher, which is currently in active development as a feature film. His ability to combine glamour, humour and a powerful message was perfectly expressed in his recent Come Together ad for the AIDS Alliance, which both The Huffington Post and The Independent enthusiastically agreed was one of the most provocative ads ever to be screened on British TV. Based in both London and Los Angeles, Gregg continues to work across all these fields and more, embracing the challenges of the new emerging platforms born of today’s unprecedentedly disrupted and multi-faceted entertainment landscape. His self-driven projects meanwhile are seeing him explore ever more original, eclectic and ambitious creative worlds, with key current projects including Flycatcher and Canoga Faults, a twisted, surreal comedy-drama TV series.
