Randall is a retired landscape architect and urban designer. In the early 1990s, he began to explore the relationship between Park Forest, Illinois, and American community planning. He discovered that the two are intricately connected to the psyche of Americans, post-World War II growth, and suburban expansion. He researched and wrote what has become the definitive account of the Village of Park Forest, Illinois—a seminal community in the suburban growth of baby-boom America. Originally published in 2000 by Johns Hopkins University Press, the new edition of his book, America's ORIGINAL GI TOWN, PARK FOREST, ILLINOIS, was released in the fall of 2010 by Windsor Hill Publishing, and a 75th-anniversary edition was published in 2025.
