Helen Oakwater is an adoptive parent; International Trainer, Keynote Speaker, Coach, Author, life long learner and founder of FAB Parents. In the early 1990s she adopted a sibling group aged 5,4 and 2 who had previously spent considerable time in foster care. Since then she has studied, read, listened and explored many avenues to understand the legacy of trauma. She's worn many hats in the adoption world including membership of the Government Adoption Task Force, trustee of a national charity (Adoption UK), sat on two local Authority Adoption Panels and trained thousands of professionals and parents. Helens mission is to help adults understand that adopted and foster childrens erratic and challenging behaviour results from their maltreatment or neglect in infancy. These children frequently experienced severe neglect, repeated abuse, domestic violence or chaos which interrupts and derails their normal developmental path and brain wiring. Similar to adult PTSD, the legacy of infant trauma causes them to act in apparently nonsensical ways. Consequently parents and carers often feel inadequate and use ineffective parenting and behaviour management strategies. Helens aim is to empower parents through understanding. She is known for making sense of nonsense. A qualified Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Trainer and Coach, she incorporates NLP into her writing and training using models, metaphors, diagrams and conversational language to help adults understand trauma triggered behaviour. Based in London, Helen enjoys travel, swimming, scuba diving, laughter and thinking outside the box.
