Hank Danielson and his wife, Julie, live on Manasota Key in Southwest Florida. Born in Western New York in 1945, he was a free range kid. He met his future wife in 8th grade, they married after college and joined the Peace Corps where they trained to teach in Segregated Alabama schools. In Malawi, they taught on a remote island in Lake Malawi, home to crocodiles, mambas and what they discovered were bright, capable African children. This alien culture accepted and welcomed them. When an angry African smashed their windows and attacked, it was their students who rescued them. Back in Western New York, the Danielson's earned masters degrees and continued to teach in area schools where American children proved every bit as creative and challenging as those in Africa. Outside of school there was bird hunting, cross country skiing, and especially sailing that drew their attention. Seriously challenged in an all night sailboat race on Lake Ontario, they learned from their failures and went on to sail all five Great Lakes. The Erie Canal took them to the sea where they explored the New England and Nova Scotia coasts, and then, on their 25th anniversary, to Bermuda. They retired south to Florida. Sailboats carried them to the Bahamas and the Caribbean where the challenge of blue water sailing blossomed to an Atlantic crossing to England, Spain the Mediterranean, and Black Sea including Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Cypress, Israel and Egypt. Back home in Florida they both enjoy the Coastal Cruisers Bicycle club where he and Julie ride regularly, sail, and enjoy foreign travel.
