Born in Munich, Germany, Ilona Schmidt spent her childhood in Nuremberg. After studying chemistry in Erlangen, she moved to Coburg in northern Bavaria for professional reasons. Today she works for an American corporation and travels the world. As a teenager, she read all the Agatha Christie novels as well as the classics, and of course, Karl May and Alexandre Dumas. She wrote her first mystery novel when she was fifteen, but it was only years later that she began to fill idle time while traveling with writing. In doing so, she writes what she also likes to read: Anything that promises adventure, mystery, and suspense. Her special love is historical novels that have been carefully researched. In general, research plays an important role in her work, so she draws her knowledge of police work from her circle of relatives and friends. Since 2013, she has published novels with Piper, Weltbild, Thienemann, Gmeiner-Verlag and Edel Elements.For the English-speaking world, she writes under the pseudonym Carly Martin. She currently lives with her husband on a farm in North Carolina, where many rescued dogs, cats, and horses find a home.
