I'm a grandmother, mother, wife, author and community activist. After 40 years of work, I wanted to have the time for family that had not been possible working full time and to write. My stories had been racing through my head for years and I wanted to make them come alive. I've published articles in both print and in iInternet publications and also have chapters in several anthologies and have a monthly column in Montana Woman Magazine and 406 Woman. But my real obsession is interpersonal communication. I became an Age-ing to Sage-ing seminar leader and a Life Transitions Coaching for 50+ adults to help them develop a profound new vision of growing older. I've been a healthcare communications administrator and consultant for a variety of healthcare organizations for over forty years. I decided to focus on writing, coaching and teaching people to improve their interpersonal communication and to shift our fear of aging to an exploration of the creative possibilities of our later years. When my first granddaughters were born I was determined to create a good relationship with them even though we lived far apart. I remembered that the adults I felt close to as a child were the ones who listened to me. They made me feel visible and important. That is how the intergenerational picture book, Granny Greeny Says Listen Louder began. As a result of years as a healthcare communications professional, I discovered that what patients needed most was to feel safe and secure with the people who cared for them. They needed to be heard. As a result, I co-authored Write Your Self Well..Journal Your Self to Health to demonstrate the value of expressive writing in helping people feel better and heal more quickly. However, face-to-face communication remained the most important ingredient in making patients feel safe and secure with staff members. I asked, “Could better communication correct some of these problems? It certainly couldn’t hurt!” So I developed interpersonal communications training for staff members. As a result, the ‘vibes’—the energy—between patients and staff improved, patients were more satisfied, and employees seemed to be happier with their patients and with each other. The space in between two people is sacred ground and it got healthier as soon as we started listening to our patients. It was all about the exchange of energetic vibrations. Several years later, science proved this to be accurate. Dr. Rollin McCraty, Director of Research at HeartMath Institute in California, discovered that the health of the energy in the space in between two people could be measured within five feet of the body. We were right. The space in between really mattered. That brings us back to Granny Greeny. Granny is a result of my experience as a child and as a professional. I reasoned that there must be plenty of children and adults who do not feel heard. That the space in between them and the people they tried to talk to was empty or upsetting. Granny makes Listening Louder a fun challenge for all of us to put down our iPads, smart phones and computers and meet face-to-face and heart-to-heart. We've even created a Listen Louder Game so we can practice. I hope you enjoy Granny Greeny, that you share it with your loved ones, and that your relationships have long, happy and healthy lives. Thanks for listening! I
