A lifelong storyteller, J. D. Phillippi draws on a diverse career and vivid imagination for source material in his writing. From dishwasher to radio talk show host, bellhop to Episcopal youth minister, he brings a depth of understanding to characters at every level of society. Whether writing short stories or in novel-length works, Phillippi weaves stories that draws the reader into the moment. Born near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Phillippi lived most of his life in the western part of the state. He attended Edinboro State College (now Edinboro University), a few miles south of Erie, PA, where he took a degree in Liberal Arts (Theater). While there he helped to put WFSE-FM on the air at the college. He worked as an announcer, Program Director, and General Manager during his time there. Following graduation, Phillippi pursued a career in radio. Beginning as a News Editor/Newscaster at WASP-AM in Brownsville PA, his storytelling abilities saw him quickly move into a full-time airshift. Phillippi became the station’s morning man in less than two years. Radio would take him to Erie, PA and then Jamestown, NY working almost exclusively in drive time airshifts. Just shy of 20 years into his radio career, Phillippi answered a call to join the staff of the Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Western New York as Diocesan Youth Missioner. He served there for 13 years before taking a job in congregational ministry in Richmond, VA. Since then he published his first book, (the short story collection “Shorts”), worked as a substitute teacher in a local school district, an Uber/Lyft driver, and audiobook narrator. He wrote, voiced and produced an independent media commentary radio program for a decade. Married to his college sweetheart, Phillippi lives outside Richmond, VA and enjoys the many attractions in the area. Their only child is also an author, published under the name K Orion Frey (“Son of the Revolution”).
