I like to talk and I like to write. Over the past 20 years, I have reached over 25,000 people every year as a public speaker. Add that up! I can hardly believe it. It's true though: I get 2,000 or so requests a year to speak about something, and find myself both humbled and grateful.
Everybody tells me I am a "visionary," but I also know the flip side of that is that I wouldn't know what I did yesterday or will do tomorrow without my smartphone calendar. Everybody has a talent or two; when you know what you have, you can identify much more closely what you don't have. I am a balloon - and my wife is the string. We make a great pair. I rejoice in both my lot and also my limitations.
I have also somehow become the most in-demand officiant for weddings in the Washington, DC region, and am often requested to officiate around the country and the world. Officiating weddings is hardly a "job," as it is everybody's best day and I get to be there. What a joy!
My www.JamesHBurch.com is a growing group of video "conversations" about contemporary spiritual topics. I'm not good at fiction, although my 12 grandchildren sometimes find it hard to distinguish when I am spinning a huge yarn, and when I am telling the truth. And now that I have found Amazon's abundant array of publishing devices, a hybrid speaking/writing monster just may have been created.
On my important spiritual side, I am the principle bishop of The Catholic Dioceses of One Spirit, a family of worldwide dioceses comprised of progressive priests (including women and men, Protestant and Catholic ministers in good standing, married and single, straight and gay) who work toward new means of spirituality for the 80% of the population no longer sustained by traditional church activities (www.OneSpiritCatholic.org). The days of institutional church - in all religions - are largely gone for good, and educated human beings in developed enclaves of the world are thankfully becoming their own gurus instead of blindly following someone else. It's that interior voice that is the seed of Divinity giving us life and connection to the All. Thank God (i.e., "Loving Consciousness")!
To my spiritual perspective on life, I bring a lot of worldly experience (Q. You know who made this world, don't you? A. God. Q. So you know who the most Worldly of All is, don't you? A. Same God.) I was a real estate developer of large mixed-use projects from the early 1970's through the early 1990's, and am still periodically engaged in that wonderful creativity. From 1965 - 1970, I worked all over the country for the federal government's "War on Poverty". I am also a political junkie, having been a political consultant to candidates for governor, senator, congress and president; a former press secretary to U.S. Senator (later Vice President) Joseph Biden. As part of my real estate development career, I was also the founding chairman of the World Trade Center Washington, D.C.
Patty and I have 5 children and 12 grandchildren. This keeps Patty really busy and me really amazed.
