Janet Zinn, LCSW, is a psychotherapist in private practice in New York City. As soon as COVID-19 was detected in the USA, it became apparent that anxiety was on the rise, and fear was leading the way into our collected psyches. Having been a mental health first responder following 9/11, and as a psychotherapist who specializes in trauma, loss and crises, Janet started blogging as a way to bring self-care suggestions in the form of tips and tools so that readers could find a way forward in that difficult time. In addition, the blog posts shared Janet’s own struggles and perspectives during those first months so readers’ experiences could be normalized by a shared understanding. Janet is inspired by her clients. She watches for trends in what is needed in mental health. And she is moved daily by the courage and grace her clients exhibit when facing adversities. After she started the blog, In the Time of Coronavirus, Janet was further motivated by the reactions and feedback she received from her readers. Thus, this book was created. She is currently a member of The Women’s Mental Health Consortium, a prominent New York-based community of mental health providers. She was previously a faculty member of the Women’s Therapy Centre Institute. As a mental health first responder following 9/11, Janet ran groups and met individually with every level of employee, from CEOs to security guards at Fortune 100 companies, as well as at smaller firms, non-profit organizations, and small to mid-sized corporations. She consulted as a trauma specialist on-site at Fortune 100 companies for over five years. Janet is an international speaker on trauma and consulted at the beginning of the pandemic in Australia. She has been featured as a trauma expert on Swedish Public Television. She has led international virtual training sessions for top executives on 9/11 anniversaries for Salomon Smith Barney and Citigroup. She supervises mental health students and professionals as they counsel various populations of all age groups, vulnerable populations, those who have faced discrimination, and victims of crimes, all of whom are dealing with trauma. She worked as a trauma consultant for New York City banks following bank robberies from 2001 to 2010. Janet Zinn has been quoted in The Times of London, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Marriage ezine, WebMD, Healthline, Bustle, and other online and print publications. She was the relationship counselor doing therapy sessions, taped live for XOX Betsey Johnson, a reality TV show on the Style Network. Currently, she is a blogger. Her blog posts can be found on www.janetzinn.com, as well as on Medium and WordPress. She started the ongoing blog, In the Time of Coronavirus, which is now called In the New Abnormal, providing a mindful approach to life’s post-pandemic challenges and a versatile menu of self-care tips. Janet blogs in tandem with her full-time private psychotherapy practice. Janet has a B.A. from Rutgers University and an MSW from New York University. She has post-graduate certificates from Fordham University, The Women’s Therapy Centre Institute, and The International Trauma Specialists Association. For In the Time of Coronavirus, Janet shares experiences, professional insights, and the tools necessary to live authentically through all of life’s ups and downs, with an eye for what we collectively experienced, finding meaning in those times, as well as a way forward.
