As one of the pioneers in the professional coaching movement, I've had the privilege and the pleasure to work with a wide variety of people; from the C-suite to the Broadway stage; from TED presenters to prison inmates. I've seen, first hand, how a few powerful questions and some generous listening can illicit inspiring changes in all kinds of people and I've worked to find ways to spread both access and the benefits of these tools to a wider population. My new book, "Take Charge of Your Talent: Three Keys to Thriving in Your Career, Organization, and Life" with co-author Don Maruska and a foreword by Jim Kouzes (Berrett-Koehler, 2013) does just that. We offer a simple approach that makes it possible for everyone to have their very own Talent Catalyst and to become a Talent Catalyst for others as well. By 2020 we hope that twenty million people or more, across twenty countries, will have the keys to take charge of their talent, with at least 20 percent of these people being from traditionally underserved populations--such as prisons, inner-city schools, and developing countries. With a background as a professional actor, director, producer, and theater owner, I've always had a keen interest in the subject of talent. And after more than twenty years of coaching more than a thousand executives, entrepreneurs, inmates, and artists, I'm convinced that talent is much more than your strengths or skill set. "Talent is your self-expression - the joyful demonstration of your unique abilities that benefit both you and the world around you. When your talent lies dormant, there is a hole in your daily life. You may feel a lack of contentment and try to fill the hole with all kinds of activities and possessions that never quite do the trick. Opposing forces blunt your efforts and squash your hopes. On the other hand, when you express your talent, the world vibrates with possibility. You feel the sweet experience of satisfaction. One idea leads to the next, and the next. Time flies. Life is filled with resources that carry you forward, sometimes in surprising ways. It doesn't matter if you hope to be an inspiring leader, a valuable contributor, or a great parent - your talent matters." Jay has been a presenter at meetings and conferences around the world. He is available for keynotes, workshops, and individual sessions. He and his family live in Charlottesville, VA. You may contact him at coach@jayperry.com. www.takechargeofyourtalent.com
