Jeanne Malmgren was born in South Carolina and lived many places before returning home to the Blue Ridge Mountains 20 years ago. She holds two degrees from Clemson University: a B.A. in Modern Languages and an M.Ed. in Clinical Mental Health. During her first career of journalism, she worked as an Associate Editor at The Mother Earth News magazine, then spent 20 years as a feature writer and editor at Florida’s largest newspaper, the Tampa Bay Times. Her work there was published in many national newspapers via newswire and won awards from the Florida Society of News Editors, Society of Professional Journalists, and the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors. Jeanne is a longtime Buddhist and co-founded a meditation center in Florida. She co-authored Journey to Mindfulness (Wisdom Publications), the autobiography of her spiritual teacher, the eminent meditation master Venerable H. Gunaratana. She now has a private practice of psychotherapy, her second career, where she specializes in mindfulness- and nature-based treatment. In recent years, Jeanne's writing has appeared in Hippocampus, Streetlight, Southern Literary Review, and an anthology of nature writing, Outdoor Adventures in the Upcountry (Hub City Press). She was nominated for a Pushcart Prize and won a “Room of One’s Own” writing residency from the Emrys Foundation for the Arts. She publishes an online newsletter, Rx Nature, and is now bravely (or recklessly) trying her hand at fiction, diving into work on a historical novel set in the wild, dark corner of South Carolina where her heart lives.
